WBHT Morning Change

(Adding nothing more than a somewhat humorous anecdote here, don't mind me):

5 years ago, I was listening to Don & Mike shortly after they started being carried on the former 95.7 Z-Talk. I remember cringing when I heard this exchange:

(Caller from N.E. PA, talking slow and not making much sense).
(Don, getting visibly annoyed): "Where are you calling from???"
(Caller): "I'm, uh... I'm near the airport."
(Don): "WHAT AIRPORT?!?"
(Caller): "Avoca Airport."
(Don): "Where the HELL is Avoca Airport?!?!?!"

Ooops ;D

Oh, and...... How many people will hear the name Kidd Kraddick and say, "Hey, he's coming back!! I wonder if Kelly K and Sid are going to be with him??"

Good shows, great shows..talent, no talent. It's not about any of these things. Citadel wanted to cut costs, plain and simple. Citadel's sales plan for the past few years has been to sell Magic and bonus BHT and/or "X" and JR. Sure, each of these stations gets some sales on their own, but the corporate direction is selling Magic over the others. Citadel is openly looking for buyers for many of their smaller & medium markets since their merger with ABC. They'll scale down the costs to make the bottom lines look better and then peddle the cluster to another group. Kraddick doesn't matter to them either way. It's just a way to make the bottom line look better.

I would wholeheartedly agree with you on that!

Because I have Disney stock, when Citadel bought the Disney stations, I got like a dollar check from Citadel. I had to do a double take because I hear that's how much their weekly part timers get.LOL

Well, it's 8:30am and it sounds like chaos. The automation is firing weird stuff. I think it just fired a "legal" between spots. Was that just a pay for play plug? There's dead air, the school delays, more delay. The Kidd crew is babbling about their weekend now and it sounds almost like name dropping. (I'm plagiarizing here) "I went to San Antonio and New Orleans, then I ran in a marathon". 12 minutes later they're still babbling about nothing. Automation problems aside...I'm NOT impressed.

To above poster...funny, when I heard the Kidd name, I thought about the Kidd Kelly thing too, but then again as soon as Oldies 92 and 100 started calling themselves "The Q" I thought of Q102.

I remember cringing when I heard this exchange:

Here's another one that could have happened...

Don: Hi, we're calling from the Don and Mike Show.
Me: What the hell is a Don and Mike Show?
Mike: C'mon, man, you know us.
Me: Never heard of you in my life, and I worked in radio for years.
Don: OK, how 'bout we're the hot new morning show in town. There's street talk on us.
Me: Not my street. What station you on? Not working for me, not ringing any bells.

NE PA didn't know(and didn't care) Don and Mike anymore than they knew NE PA.

And you know this how? Proof? Let's have it. Of all the AM personalities you mentioned, the only one who is native to the area is John Webster. All the others came here and liked it enough to stay and build an audience. More importantly, "loyalty to locals," as you put it, is admirable, it's what any PD worthy of the title prays for day in and day out.

[size=15) I beg to differ. I believe they stayed in this market because they could not get better jobs outside of this market that paid decent money. I remember Daniels saying when he first came her to KRZ that he didn't like this area. Jumping Jeff was hired at KRZ for something like $135.00 a week. He was the only one Jim Rising could hire that would take the job for that low pay. Rising hoped that Walker would eventually leave so he wouldn't have to let him go

Just for the record, I had nothing to do with that last post. I lived and worked in the market. I had other opportunities and left. I still head back to the area from time to time.

The locals I had mentioned in previous posts are rarities in this business. They are smart enough to realize that they have a good thing. Most people in radio find a good thing and then try to find another good thing.

Didn't Rocky and Sue make this mistake? They left for Florida and ended up coming back? I think the story was that the station changed formats and they were welcomed back with open arms, but what would have happened if KRZ had found a kick ass replacement while they were gone. KRZ is home for them and I don't want to speak for them, but if I had to guess, the phrase "don't know what you've got till it's gone" didn't ring louder or more true for them when they found themselves out of work in Florida.

"Don't Know What You've Got Till It's Gone." Phrase or Hair Metal song....

Now, please, if I have the details of the Rocky and Sue thing wrong, don't give me crap. Let me stress again, that I find the NEPA market to be pretty kick as and a throwback to simpler times. Ok, and for the people who are going to jump on me for saying the area is a throwback to "simpler times," please understand that I am not saying the people are simple.

The area is a throwback. Trust me, nobody is living in Wilkes Barre or Scranton for the booming Metropolis lifestyle and cutting edge arts, entertainment, and jobs in technology.

Good people....nice area....just not for everybody.

God, you just don't know when to quit, do you? If you haven't offended most everyone here yet, you're getting there in a hurry. I'd say more, but you really are too easy of a target. Did you EVER work in radio? Why do I suspect not? Just so you'll know, we're doing OK here without you. It was tough at first, but we made it.

I believe they stayed in this market because they could not get better jobs outside of this market that paid decent money.

Warmland, aren't you the same gentlemen who also believes AM is on the verge of a major comeback?

Yes, I currently work in radio. No, I won't give my name because it's not worth the headache and the BS.

Maybe I am losing my mind here, but what have I said that is so offensive? Do you really think Wilkes Barre and Scranton are a booming Metropolis? Is that what has your panties in a bunch?

Please, take a step back and again, understand that I am not attacking the area! Wilkes Barre, Scranton, Allentown, Harrisburg, Lancaster, etc...these aren't major cities.

They are nice cities with great people. Cities that I enjoy spending time in with friends and in some cases family.

Calling an area a throwback is in many ways a compliment.

This is kind of standard in this room to attack somebody when you don't agree with their opinions. When these boards first started popping up in the mid 90's real radio professionals posted words on a regular basis. Then this garbage started.

Please, take the DStroyer approach. If this is the same DStroyer from WSBG and multiple shifts at Citadel Wilkes Barre....he's a good guy that doesn't seem to get caught up in the BS. He comes here, talks radio, and doesn't seem to take everything so seriously.

I'm sorry that I offended everybody, their mother, and the friends and family of Sen. Arlen Spector.

Re-read my posts and you will see that my opinions aren't anything more than opinions and my comments about the area are compliments more than they are slams. (If they are slams at all)

I don't see where any of your opinions of the NEPA radio market are offensive at all.

It's a unique market and the biggest mistake any professional can make when they come here is to assume the rules in other markets apply here.

It does take awhile to integrate. The "average joe" in NEPA can be standoffish at first, but once you have their trust, they'll support you to the end. Its not a coincidence that many on air personalities have been able to stay here for decades.

I know that satellite morning shows have worked in some markets, however I'm not convinced that it will make it here.

Well put, my friend. I worked in that market for about a year, and you sum it all up very nicely.

Please...somebody pinch me. I'm being complimented on a radio message board!

Again, to anybody who was offended...that wasn't the intention.

Trust me, if I wanted to make fun of a Pennsylvania radio market, I would make fun of the people of Erie.

Just kidding.

To the poster who had the Q102 flashback when he heard "THE Q" replacing Oldies92----ironic that one of Q102's many morning guys ended up currently doing mornings there---
