CC did the old heave-ho at BIG 100 this morning. At least 4 jocks have been tossed out. Format expected to flip at noon today.

This may or may not mean something:

http://www.whois.sc/1003theriver.com
Owned by Clear Channel. Registered in the past month.

The domain comes up as "authorization required." Clear Channel does this right before a new station launches. So, somewhere, Clear Channel is about to filp a station at 100.3 to "the River." Seeing as WBIG's demise is impending, I'd assume they'll be classic hits-aaa, a'la 100.7 the River in Raleigh/Greensboro, which incidentally, flipped from oldies last year or the year before.

WBIG is running a spot stating that "the evolution of BIG 100.3" begins at 5 p.m.

The River in Raleigh is really more of an AAA.

This one will be a classic hits station ("the evolution") and probably makes sense.

I guess the "evolution" rules out Sports as well. It will be interesting to see how BIG goes up against Classic Rock WARW, which is usually the lowest rated full signal FM in DC.

While the formats are similar, Classic Hits has been getting a much broader audience than Classic Rock lately, as shown by the Nassau Classic Hits stations (The Hawk, The Eagle, Frank-FM) and Clear Channel's own Hot AC/Classic Hits hybrid River stations in Harrisburg and Hartford. Of course, these are all in much smaller markets than DC. It remains to be seen whether the very diverse DC area can support a station that, like WARW, heavily relies on 70's rock.

DCRTV is reporting that the Big 100 name is staying. Horrible move if true. The Big brand is associated with Oldies. The die-hard Oldies fans will leave the station no matter what it's called, but new listeners won't even realized the station has changed. They'll think of it as the same old Oldies station.

According to R&R's Web site: The New Big 100. They'll still play some 60s and 70s but are adding music up to currents. So, it'll be Adult Hits. "A radio evolution, not a revolution."

Guess they're trying to flip an oldies station to adult hits without p*ssing off the station's previous listeners, like what happened when WCBS-FM flipped to Jack in NYC. Jack in NYC still isn't making the impact there it is in other markets.

Some questions: Will Mix turn more current again, possibly dumping 70s and limiting 80s content? Will an AM staton pick up all oldies (late 50s to early 70s)? Why didn't CBS start a Jack station in DC? Did CBS' research turn up something CC's didn't?

R&R got some bad info. All of the other trades, plus DCRTV were reporting Classic Hits as the new format, and it appears they were right. It's been all 70's rock hits since 5PM.

They should. Their half-hearted attempt at Variety Hits didn't fool anyone, and with Z104 gone, there's a hole for something a bit more modern.

Maybe one in the outer suburbs. The DC stations are either successful, foreign language, brokered, or owned by CC, and I don't see 570 or 1260 taking over Oldies.

I think Mix just pre-empted them with their move to "The Best Mix Of Everything". It wasn't the only place CBS got beat to the punch- similar things happened in Philly and Boston.

All depends on how they handle it- if the pitch is done effectively and marketed out the wazoo, it COULD work. But, generally, you are right- THE most difficult thing to do in marketing is change consumers' minds.

94-7 The Arrow run RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN.......SAVE YOURSELF :) LOL

Re: WBIG

Did Tom Kelly sign off the old format at 5? Any idea if there will be any talent going forward? I didn't get any indication of such between 6 and 7.

Sounded like Cousin Vinnie had the whole thing voice tracked from this morning until the end. New PD and jocks coming...

Re: New BIG is just old Arro 94.7

The new BIG format sounds virtually identical to the All Rock and Roll Oldies (ARRO) format that 94.7 signed on with in late 93. At the time WCXR was classic rock with a small 2 something share. ARRO killed WCXR and then promptly "evolved" and picked up the classic rock banner. Will be interesting to see if history repeats itself. I remember commenting on rec.radio.broadcasting at the time that I couldn't believe CBS would do a classic rock like format when WCXR had such a small share.

Here's what I said in 1993:
Subject: Arrow 94.7 Wash, DC

I just noticed tonight that W-lite (WLTT) in Washington
is now Arrow 94.7 (WARW) "All Rock 'N Roll Oldies". Given
that they are owned by CBS it must be a similar format to
the other Arrow stations that CBS owns.

Given that WCXR has had horrible
ratings over the last several years I can't imagine why CBS thinks
they would be succesful with this format in Washington. Two similar
sounding stations dividing a 2.5 share doesn't sound like a recipe
for success to me.

I think it was "Shout!"; it wasn't anything special, and the air talent on at the time said nothing about the forthcoming changes. After the song, the station played exactly the same clip that can be heard right now at wbig.com, and I think that the first song was "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet".

LILLY-white WBIG

Has 100.3 BANNED music by black artists?

No more so than most other Classic Hits stations.

Think of it as a light Classic Rock. The genre is predominately white.

To turn the tables, have WMMJ, WKYS, et al, banned WHITE artists?

I get it!
"Turntables."
VERY funny.

Thanks.

Remember, the 9:30 show is different from the 7:30 show.

Enjoy the veal!
