WBIR - Too much clutter on the newscasts!

Why does WBIR have to clutter up the bottom 1/4 of the TV screen during their newscasts with those annoying banners that intrude on the story they are trying to cover? Several times the banner has covered up key parts of what you are trying to see.

Not really their choice, it's Gannett's new package, being implemented in all markets.

And the real driving force behind it is something called 'added value'. In exchange for the buy, advertisers now expect you to give them more than they bought. An advertiser logo rotates on the right side of that bar. And nobody will ever notice but the advertiser who then feels all warm and toasty inside.

Conversely, if I see on the bottom of that bar stories coming up that don't interest me, I have plenty of warning to quit wasting time sitting in front of the tube.

I can kinda take or leave the new graphics. Truth is, I've not been a fan of Ch 10's news for years. It's actually my third choice in the market. To me, I've never cared for all their hokey, feel good, fluffy type stuff they fill their newscasts with. Channel 8, WVLT has been my favorite in the market now for years. And since they got that big market news director in last year who re-imaged the station to "Local 8", it's gotten even better. Some may call it sensational, but to me, it's slick, grabs your attention, and looks like a major market newscast. Also, meteorologist David Aldrich is far better than anyone else in the market. Anyway, I typically always choose WVLT's news, and then my next choice would be Channel 6, with Ch. 10 last. Really the only time I watch Ch 10's newscast is sometimes at 10 when it's on Fox 43. (wish Ch 8 would do early news at 9 or 10 on MyVLT).

Gray has pumped tons of cash into WVLT as it has its other operations. You should see the operation they have in Hazard, Ky. No competition what-so-ever yet they have the operation of a large market station.

8 has been spending heavily since Gray bought it sometime in the 90's. A former WIVK sales rep worked there for a few years and she was always talking about how they have to fight the perception that WBIR is still the best. All of the stations can see the ratings daily since the TV stations are metered. They can see where at news time it doesn't matter what the public is watching before. Most of them habitually switch over to WBIR.

I like Gray as an owner as well. Besides WVLT, I have family that I visit in central TX several times each year, and I've always thought Gray's KWTX in Waco was another excellently ran station. But as far as Knoxville goes, I like everything about WVLT's news (content, graphics, set) far more than WBIR or WATE.

Even though I haven't lived in Knoxville since 1986, I still have family (mom, brother, sister, niece and nephews) that live in the area, so I still visit several times a year. Even before I moved to Middle Tennessee in 1986, I always thought WBIR news was way overrated and they even did hokey, feel good, fluff pieces even back then. I think one fo the worst was the week they did a nightly feature about Bill Bates making the Cowboys as a free agent, like he was the only person in the history of Professional Sports to make a professional team that wasn't drafted by that team.

I also thought the on-air personalities that channel 10 has used over the year were some of the dullest, most boring reporters and news anchors in the Knoxville area, such as Russ Bivens, Al Klinch, Moria Kaye, etc. And I have never under stood why so many people we so enamored with Margie Ison. Usually, if she said something was going to happen in her weather forecast, you could count it not happening.

You just described every weather person to ever work in Knoxville.
