Last time I check both of these country stations are owned by Town Square Media and both are Class C flamethrowers in the same market. Why would you own two stations in the same market that compete against each other? My last trip to Owensboro last week seemed like everyone was listening to WKDQ so it seems WBKR is not doing so good. Seems to me it's a shame for WBKR to have a massive signal like it does and nobody listens to it, maybe its time for a format change.
The approach between the two always used to be WKDQ focused its sales on Evansville while WBKR was all Owensboro. So, the two never really competed because they didn't sell to the same markets despite having the same format.
That actually looks to still be the case. WKDQ tops the ratings in Evansville while WBKR tops them (with almost a 20 share) in Owensboro. Neither has much listening in the other market. While you may have observed more people listening to 'KDQ than 'BKR, the ratings don't support that conclusion. Unless the ratings start showing something different, I wouldn't look for any changes. Both stations are making big money for Townsquare.

KDQ isn't as clear in central Western Kentucky as BKR for one. Plus, most people in Western Kentucky listen to BKR. If you changed the format of WBKR, there would be riots in the streets of small towns all over Western Kentucky. That's not a station you change the format on. Way too much history and heritage there for it to be blown up.
I think the numbers to look at, in reality, are the billing of both stations. That tells you who's clearly in the lead from a money making point of view.

Depends on which part of Western Kentucky you're talking about. I'd say everything east of Hopkins County listens to 'BKR. Everything west is locked on to WKYQ in Paducah. Mention 'BRK to folks in Paducah and Murray and most will ask "What's WBKR?" Unless they're an Owensboro transplant, of course.
