WBLK-FM On-air line up

I was thinking to myself i know WBLK is in the top 5 in the ratings because their the only urban powerhouse in Buffalo but i feel if there was a second urban station they would switch up a little because i feel tom joyner morning show should not be on a station that target demo is 18-34. I feel this way because tom joyner is mostly on Urban Ac stations around the country so for 4 hours i could see listeners being confuse on why they hear so much old school r&b songs. My other opinion is i feel they should put a female voice in the weekday lineup that connect with the african american women in the buffalo area. i know regent commuications which owns WBLK dont really have money but i wish they could make the station more interactive for their target demo, and for the colleges in the area. www.wblk.com

WDKX in Rochester is stronger in a similar-sized market, owning the 12-34 demos in both city and suburbs, and IMHO it's in no small measure because they're live and local in all the key dayparts including Tariq Spence's morning show.

If anything is going to compete with WBLK, it needs to make both the Urban Soccer mom and children happy.
That may be hard to do, expecially when a station down the dial (One that isn't even urban!) has already swallowed up the words "Music from today and back in the day".

Some posters and readers just don't get how successful WBLK is. It's a heritage urban station with roots, two to three generations deep. We're talking inner city heritage, not a Johnnie-come-lately kind of format.

One of the more trite and ridiculous slogans. Speaking of sloganeering, read the Alan Burns study to which SirRoxalot refers in another thread. Shows you how far off base most radio stations have become.

I respect WBLK history i know it goes generation deep but to tell you the truth i feel some of the jocks on their should be on a urban AC. i go to college in the buffalo area but i just wish the station will be more interactive with their younger demo at times they remind me of an urban ac. i know they recently just had on-air audition for mixshows. i also had heard that urban station in Rochester , and that station sound like a station i could listen to a lot.

Yep.....lets talk history

BLK...once upon a time kiddies....not only had the HOUND

but a block of County and Western Music and a Block of Polka Music....daily......not just on Weekends....

and oh yeah it had soul music too.....................

Not bad for a Depew , New York radio station

I'm merely saying I better assocate the words "Today and back in the day" with an urban variety station, not a variety station.

That would seem to me to be a personal association on your part. "Old Skool" would be "urban". "Back in the day"? Not so much.

At the end of the day in the latest ratings WBLK is number 4 in the city behind a top 40 station so as long they are in the top 5 in ratings their is no point of changing anything in the station

True dat. And their W25-54 ratings are equally strong in every daypart. Some folks don't realize that WBLK+WYRK+WJYE control a significant number of shares for Women 18-49 and 25-54 (bonus Jack and it gets stronger.) If a client needs to reach Women, Regent is almost one-stop-shopping. Entercom counters with Star + Kiss, a very strong combo. Maintaining rate integrity in Buffalo in this economy is a challenge. One complaint you'll often hear from reps is "the guys at the competition are whoring their rates and killing us."

I realize what WBLK is doing so far is good for women and on weekends night with their mixshow they target the young and colleges kids in buffalo. i still feel they should have a women personality in their day part tho.

riddle me this:

i know here comes board op/aka dumb azz...
but can you tell me, *WHY* 'blk is doing soo well ?

morning show, as documented by other posters, in previous thread:
does not really *hit* the younger demo;
the sunday afternoon(flashback) when I occassionally listen is geared
for an audience . . mid 30s, urban audience

but,
(this makes sense)but, the friday night broadcast, tuning in around
9:30pm, [1/2 air check], is def. the total OPPOSITE of the sunday afternoon...
engaging w/ professional jocks, creating such a youthful presentation,
music intense and all out young-excitement...there is no way, the same
crowd is listening....which is *smart* (and deliberate) but , all over the map...

furthermore, the sunday morning time slots, are dedicated to the
religious (?)obligations/and or church-programming which is
history, yes...but the 21-year old(male) isnt setting his alarm clock,
to tune in, to repent his sins, lol from the night before...now, one can
argue, that at that time, the youth audience is sleeping . . . but, the
programming on sunday is so vastly different . . i cant believe it is
successfully on the same station.

like now, (last time i checked), it is/was the quiet storm, while
other station have the usual rotation of music...sure its the middle
of the night...but, for the kids in summer that are up, driving around
dad's sports car...wont be tuning into sade...or luther . . to get it goin'!

so, how does a station, succeed a/c morning show, friday nite party,
sunday morning quiet time, a mid30s sunday afternoon time block,
and over nites the elevator going to the 12th or 13th floor of the rand building?
i'm sure the day part sizzles, but that wont surprise me, that must be where
they make up some ground?!

Re: riddle me this:

Really, I can understand your curiousity. Try looking at WBLK from a different perspective. You're trying to solve a puzzle using your version of reality. That isn't a bad thing, but it's just going to lead you to some different answers.

It's been in Buffalo since the early to mid-60s. Yeah, old skool. But the heritage runs deep.

You're right, the morning show is a 25-49 show that "spills" into 18-34 and 45-54. Perfect positioning.

Good dayparting.

Go back to sleep like the rest of your friends ;) or go to church. "The church" is the center of the African American community and plays a major role in social development. Read a little bit of history; from the dark days of slavery to the liberation preached by Dr. Martin Luther King, the parallels of suffering and emancipation are similar to what's found in the teachings of Jesus Christ. The programming is VERY successful in terms of ratings and revenue.

Bro, it's Sunday night! Everybody's chillin'. Gotta re-charge the batteries. Some people gotta work in the morning. Again, dayparting.

Now yer thinkin'! See, that wasn't so hard. You kinda put the pieces of the puzzle together yourself.

In the middle of the night, you might want to tune in to Sade, or Luther, while you're cruisin' with that hot babe, and see what gets goin'...

Otherwise, what Nine said - a heritage station, with little direct competition, dayparting to appeal to the audience that it has identified and focused on over a long period of time - and doing a damned fine job.

thank you for the informative and
educational post... i almost was
in consideration for running the
board, for the sunday-morning express..
of good news! (years ago)...however,
as they always do, went within some
one already on the payroll.

again, thanks for the great post !
