ESPN is leased on WRKS-FM 98.7, not on WBLS.

He's saying "What if" ESPN ended up on WBLS instead of WRKS if Radio One had owned WBLS and they are near the same financial problems as Emmis.

I'm not sure what any of you are saying. I'll give it a try..
Is it, "if Radio One had purchased WBLS would ESPN now be on WBLS instead of 98.7 given their similar financial problems to Emmis"?

Since this what if Radio One had bought WBLS never happened this seems like a dead topic not worth discussing.

Cathy Hughes did an article on All Access last year. Cathy did mention trying to enter the New York City and Chicago market but the stations were too expensive. I guess in Chicago maybe the Emmis stations that went to Merlin. Not sure if they were on the market yet for sell at the time. Honestly they need to fix the stations they have now before they pick up more. You all know the history of what they did in Los Angeles and Boston.

Yes...they are making money in D/FW with Old School 94.5 and KBFB 97.9 the Beat

Los Angeles was a no win situation what with a declining Black population, the entry of KXOL "Latino" and changes in music that have helped Power and even the CHR stations.

On the other hand, Radio One's adaptation to PPM in Houston has been one of radio's greatest success stories, and most their other markets look good.

Radio One should of dropped out of the Urban format in LA and tried something else, that might be the case for other markets as well.

I know Salem is doing some secular talk formats in certain markets, and one of the Merlin stations is doing talk as opposed to all news.

And the employee cuts continue in several markets.

WZAK (Urban Ac) and WENZ (Urban) both out of Cleveland perform well for Radio One also.

So do KBXX (Urban)& KMJQ (Urban AC) here in Houston, making them the number 1 and 2 station here, but that's just by default (they are the only urbans here)

That's not "just by default."

When the PPM rolled out, the two Radio One stations did very poorly compared to the diary results.

The Radio One research department along with the programmers made a tough call and decided the issue was not the PPM methodology; they decided that both stations were too loose and too "chatty" and that they were losing ATE due to sloppy execution.

Both stations were severely adjusted and both responded in PPM. They regained their positions of dominance based on better programming for the new measurement system.

Houston did not have the issues New York and all the other PPM markets had with PPM in that Houston had always had Address Based Tecruiting back to the roughly two years as a pre-currency test market. Address Based Recruiting, now done to some extent in all PPM markets, was employed in the Houston test because when the test was started, there was still the prospect of the PPM being a joint Arbitron Nielsen project and Nielsen brought Address-Based Recruiting to the table.

This fact made it easy for Radio One to decide they had a product problem, not a measurement issue.

That's good info. But I just have that feeling that something isn't right with that PPM method generally.

And let's remind everyone that Radio One has China Radio International running on their station in Boston: WILD-AM 1090.

"Oh! Oh! Oh!
I can't stand
any of CRI's shows!"

(To the tune of the Tom Joyner theme, of course!)

man I wish there was a like button on here cause you hit the nail on the head black-gold!!

Bottom line if Radio One took over WBLS they would ruin it. They dont know anything about New York City radio and they would force Tom Joyner on WBLS eventhough Harvey's show was a joint venture with ICBC and Premiere Radio Networks. Now I think Premiere fully controls the show with ICBC out of the picture.

WBLS sounds like the typical Urban AC across America so there is no "NYC" difference. Face it.. Joyner, Harvey and Baisden are just about ALL of the Urban AC stations in America. I actually like Radio One. Here in Atlanta, all three of there stations sound pretty good and they're always in the streets. Now if yall want to start throwing jabs at Radio One for there departure in LA and Boston, lets look at how Clear Channel wants to get rid of Urban period!!!

Good Day
