WBMW Observations...

Listening to 106.5 and their delivery is very different today. They're going dry in and out of their commercial breaks. And today during the 12 noon hour usually reserved for all 80's songs, I heard them play ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down." Could it be that Kool 101's playlist tweaks a week ago are putting somewhat of a scare into 'BMW? Hmmm...

Also, they must have a really good relationship with Central Auto Group, because you always hear a spot from them as the last commercial of a WBMW stopset.

What do you mean dry in and out of spots?

And Don't Bring Me Down was released in July 1979. I am sure they play other songs like that on the cusp.

"Dry in an out of spots" - going right from the last commercial (again, usually CAG) back into the music without either a liner or a check of the "Eastern Connecticut Radar Weather." Anyway, someone at Full Power must be reading this board because that issue has apparently been resolved.

It's seldom one hears a station going directly from one program element into another, without SOME kind of ID!

Maybe if this PPM thing takes off, we'll have a slew of radio stations just playing music and commercials with no ID's whatsoever, other than a buried legal. ::)

Charlie Parker used to have WDRC jocks do that on purpose. His feeling was that the station should dis-associate itself from musical interruption by not putting any jingles or liners near spots. It's pretty clever thinking, actually.

So WBMW plays a boatload of recurrents, one of them being Maroon 5's "This Love." I don't know when this started, but they actually edited out the lyric "every inch of you" - you just hear music followed by "...you" in that portion of the song. I don't know of any other stations that have edited this song in that way. It's not really a "dirty" lyric at all... did they get any complaint calls? What led to this edit?

VH-1 used to edit the line "keep her coming every night" from that same song. As for WBMW-FM, I can't get a usable signal of them here in New Britain's south end. My Walkman struggled to get the same station inside of Mohegan Sun Casino. (As expected, WCTY-FM 97.7 was the strongest, since their transmitter is within two miles of the complex.)

Perhaps you might have better luck picking them up in Foxwoods in Ledyard, where 'BMW's transmitter is based!

Nah! I don't go to Foxwoods! No thanks! WBMW-FM may technically be the most powerful FM in New London County, but yet I almost never get a signal of there's here in New Britain.

I'm certain that WCTY-FM 97.7 is on the tower you see at the CT Route 32 exit from CT Route 2A. Isn't that also the tower for WHPX-TV (ION) channel 26?

The WHPX-TV tower(s) are located off Route 85 in Montville. (Wish WCTY had that kind of height !)

So WBMW's been doing this "Dog Days Of Summer" contest asking listeners to submit photos of your dogs to win prizes. There are two huge disclaimers on this contest that the station stresses: "Submit only pictures of your dogs" - which I understand, you can't win for another person. But the second one is a real humdinger: "No humans, please." Have people really sent in photos of people for this "dog" contest? Come on now.

This morning, during the 6 AM news, they threw it to break, and instead of commercials, I heard the end of Jordin Sparks' "Tattoo" cold segue into Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way" - a song rarely, if ever, played on 106.5. Someone owes McMahon or Murphy a free spot... Not sure if this was a side effect of Sandy or what, but still weird to hear...

Educated guess: The computer froze and silence sensor activated the emergency music. Stuff happens.

Memo to WBMW: Please lower the volume on your stream! It's been sounding awfully loud and distorted since Tuesday morning. Gives "Full Power Radio" a whole new meaning!

As of Wednesday, WBMW is now giving their legal ID as "WBMW, and WBMW-HD1..." I bet all four HD radio owners in Connecticut are looking forward to what Red Wolf will be putting on the HD2 channel! :D

Fuller has three new/recently acquired tranlators to feed: 99.5 in New London and Clinton, and another in Montauk on 93-something that's currently relaying 94.9
