WBMW

Yesterday afternoon, I was sampling this AC station when two specific talkups stood out. First, she said: "Number one in the ratings, WBMW..." I don't know, can radio stations get away with this? Yes, in the past, I've heard stations refer to themselves as "Arbitron-rated, number one", but this is the first time I've heard a radio station say that it was flat-out "number one in the ratings." Big difference in context. Another odd talk break between records, same jock, same afternoon, she said: "Today is Thursday, April 30th." That is something you don't hear on radio, the DJ giving the day and date. And for what purpose, to let listeners know that it's not a canned voice they are hearing?

Radio statons are great at playing the deception game. Especially when it comes to ratings. If a station is #1 in a demographic, even if it's male/female 45 - (to the other side of the grass) they can claim "Thanks for making us #1"
It's nothing but bs used to entice new advertisers and keep the old customers happy.

I've listened a little more, and it seems as if every jock is saying, "A reminder that you're listening to WBMW, today, Thursday, May 7, 2009..." while talking up a song. Of course, they're not specifically saying "keep this in mind when you're filling out your diary," but when your same jocks say, "Number one in the ratings" at least twice an hour, someone has got to put two and two together eventually...

I've listened SoftRock 106.5 a few times via their webstream. I'm not in their demo, but it sounds pretty much like any other station with that format (including the horrible Delilah show).

Their sister station Jammin' 107.7 is pretty good (for the most part). They play quite a bit of music that is different from what's played on CBS's 93.7 in Hartford.

That being said about both stations, I wonder how 104.1 is gonna sound once it's officially under Fuller's control.

But 104.1 needs help as they went down 2 shares in the last book. Maybe another filp is in the plans? Anyone say Jammin 104 Hits and Hip Hop.

I say no to that. They already gave us Power 104.1 one for 4 years. If that happens, I'll go back to WCCC, whom I've barely listened to since the switch in October of 2007.

Radio, in general, needs help.

That was Clear Channel that gave us Power which failed mostly because of the afternoon talkshow out of New York. Maybe rhythmic again wouldn't hurt, not that Hot 93.7 isn't fine doing it by themselves. I doubt the new company wouldn't want to try AC and go up with Lite.

In regards to the original comment made by D to the J, there is no enforcement basis to stop hyperbolic comments unless you're mentioning Arbitron or Neilson or another source. I've been fortunate enough to have been PD at a few stations that were #1 12+, 25-54, etc. We would always say "Arbitron rated number 1...". Competitors would bitch and complain to Arbitron who would simply send them a letter saying that we WERE #1, so they couldn't do anything about it.

Generic statements like "#1 in the ratings", without citing a source are allowed. That's called 'creativity", I guess. Just like WSB-FM in Atlanta has been "voted number 1 for listening at work", for almost 10 years. I don't think they really ever were until CC unplugged the competition. Ironically, now since they actually ARE in that position, the 'voted' hype is off the air.

What a wacky biz.

Which is why it comes as sort of a shock to me, who has in past years heard "Arbitron-rated #1" on some radio stations' imaging, to hear such a statement that doesn't even cite the firm recording the ratings. I wonder if it would be any different if it were a PPM market - then again, PPM is also an Arbitron product, though not "old school" ratings... Whatever - I just now think it's funny that the country station in the market (as referenced in another thread) is now taking potshots at WBMW for their baseless claims... lol!

LOL, I can tell you for sure it's not going to be that!

Power 104.1 was poorly done, if done properly, it could have given 93.7 a run for it's money.

They might of had something if they never had that talkshow during the afternoon. But I don't think Hot 93.7 needs a run for its money. Turn 104.1 into a CHR and give KISS the run for the money it has needed for years.

Yeah, thats all CT needs is another CHR, I can pretty much guarantee you that it wont be that either!

Too bad creative imaging has become part of the past at most stations. Nothing like getting fired up to rock against the competition.
