WBMX, new frequency, same music :-p

Well, many of you know I am NOT a big fan of rock music, maybe because so much of it is played on Boston and Cape Cod radio?  Well, maybe, but I never was a big fan of it to begin with.  So all we have is just simply a frequency change to a Pru Tower...tower.  So now downtown Boston can hear more of a mostly pop rock station.  Yeah, you can detect my sarcasm...;D  Yes I am reaching out to my fellow dance music fans, but can somebody please tell me, why do Hot AC stations play mostly pop rock?  Isn't dance and R&B also part of Hot AC, and if it is, why does it not get as much play?  It's so great that Oldies 103.3 is playing more great 70's disco and soul music plus some 80's dance and R&B.  That's my favorite station for now.

You know, that's a pretty good question, and I have to agree with you. My guess is that it comes down to demographic. They probably have research that shows that the type of people who listen to Mix don't care for dance or disco, while the people who listen to WODS are more likely to want to hear disco music, since more of that music was popular during the era of the 70s. Those who don't want the heavy dose of disco have WROR as their alternative.

On the other hand, there were two types of Top 40 during the 90s, CHR and CHR/Dance. Yet, there are few stations that cater to the 90s dance audience right now, and my guess is, the 90s dance music didn't have the same mass appeal that disco did.

As for Mix flipping to the Pru, I suspect this is more about competing directly with Kiss, since it is my understanding that 107.9 now comes off the Pru. In fact I believe I have airchecks somewhere with the late Earnie Anderson doing Top of the Hour I.D's that say "Broadcasting, from high atop the Pru....WXKS FM, Medford-Boston, Kiss 108!"

No! A Hot AC playing dance music will do it in the worst way possible. The typical soccer mom will change the station when a song such as David Guetta f/Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over comes on Mix 98.5. The typical teen or 20-something CHR listener won't change the station when that song comes on Kiss 108. As it is, some people hate dance music with a passion.

My idea of the typical Mix soccer mom (as opposed to Magic soccer mom) - one with a tattoo (tramp stamp) whose career includes being a "dancer" or "escort." Also, when the kids try to catch on to a hard rock/headbanger AC/DC, Nickelback or Van Halen tune, said mom drowns them out with her singing along to that headbanger tune, a la that Friendly's mom who embarassed her daughter and her friends in the SUV on that ad!

Kiss 108 has always been at the Top of the Pru. As far as i can know, 104.1, WXKS-FM, WMJX, WZLX, WBOS, WROR, and WTKK are all up there.

CHR Dance is not a format on the radar in the USA. It's CHR Mainstream (Pop/Rock/Hip Hop) and CHR Rhythmic - usually just hip hop (& r&b). The Hip Hop format is what emerged into dominance in the 90's, NOT CHR Dance.

i agree with you @Radiojay1, Mix 104.1 should play the same music as they are playing now, but at least add some NEW r&b music (Tank, Melinda Doolittle, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston) as well as some NEW Dance music.
If not, than Star 93.7 should return, or at least play more new AC music on there. Something's gotta be done here in Boston. There are way too many stations playing too much Rock and Roll

I agree with you, dude! After BCN's death, my count of the "rock overload" stations is still 9. The stations: River, BOS, Mike, ZLX, FNX, Mix, ROR, AAFs and Kiss, the latter which is apparently headed towards a 9 rating. (Magic's not on the list yet, but keep playing those COZ-type artists like Journey, REO and VH.....) In case anyone's wondering, I do count Pat Benatar ("Jessie's Girl" falls under her umbrella since Rick Springfield used her band for that LP), Lit, All-American Rejects, Coldplay, The Fray and Chris Daughtry as being part of the rock umbrella. Even at job #2, the store insists on using piped rock music of artists I've never heard of and songs I've never heard of outside the workplace. :)

I heard Sir Mix A Lot "Baby Got Back" on MIKE today. When did THAT become rock? Oh, I guess because it has a whip noise...which reminds you of Whip It by Devo...which sported orange hats in the video...when you think of oranges, you think Valencia...Valencia is of course in Southern California...when you think SoCo, you think of the Sunset Strip...the home for groups like Motley Crue...which is, of course, ROCK...wow Steve, I see where you're coming from now.

Wow mistermic, you heard one dance song.  Did you change the station after that? ;D  Let's see what we have.....92.5 WXRV, 92.9 WBOS, 93.3 WSNE, 94.1 WHJY, 95.5 WBRU, 96.5 WMLL, 97.7 WKAF (and 107.3 WAAF), 100.1 WWFX, 100.3 WHEB, 101.1 WGIR, 101.5 WWBB, 101.7 WFNX, 102.1 WSAK, 104.1 WBMX, 104.5 WXLO, 105.7 WROR, 106.3 WFNQ.  These stations play all rock or a lot of rock.  It's really a rock music fan's radio paradise in the Boston area and anywhere within Route 495.

Mix shouldn't delve into Dance/Rhythmic music again. They did that when Jerry Mckenna was there and I really did not like it at all. They should remain as they are, but try to freshen things up a little bit.
