WBNJ Applies to Raise Power

WBNJ, 91.9, Barnegat has applied for a "minor change" to raise their power from 4500 watts vertical to 15,000 watts vertical ..
Looks to be from the same transmitter site with the same height as their current set-up ..
Should definitely make the station come in better in and around Toms River ..

I hope this doesn't mean that WBNJ will lose its LOCAL focus in favor of targeting listeners at the northern-fringe like Toms River, Lakewood, Etc...

Being LOCAL has been the station's key to success, LOCAL listeners in Tuckerton, Ocean Acres, etc. couldn't care less about Brick, Seaside or Monmouth County.

I took a look at the engineering map and it is a very interesting upgrade. The upgrade will boost their 60 DBU coverage from Barnegat Light to Seaside Heights on the shore. They will be using a new directional antenna but it will be exactly the same height as their present license. They have nowhere else to go as they are squeezed in between WLFR (91.7) and WLNJ (91.7).

Take a look at the map.

Yes, interesting indeed ..
Expanding the signal north is now marred by WLNJ ..
I'm actually still surprised a 91.7 was even able to fit here with 91.9 so close by ..

As far as JerseyShor's concerns ..
I would expect them to maybe cover a little more Toms River activities, but nothing more than that ..
Don't forget .. this is not a big mega-company that owns the station ..
They will strictly focus on the areas they cover, which is most of Ocean County ..

I just cannot understand why they would want to increase their power bill for such little gain. It is a non-comm and they can''t sell comercials.
The map surprised me too.

I a surprised that WLNJ could be squeezed in there too. When they applied for their CP WBGD (91.9) still had their license.

With the deletion of WBGD in Brick, WBNJ was afforded the opportunity to increase their northern coverage ..
But, because of WLNJ, it looks like any increase is just going to shoot up the coast ..

I really don't see what it is they gained for what they had to spend.

On WYRS's website I've seen no mention so far of the 91.7 simulcast in New Egypt / Lakehurst
(or the 102.5 in Whiting for that matter). I hope they sell the translator to WBNJ because it's a shame that 91.9
has to battle with 91.7 in Manchester Township/Whiting now....And selling 102.5 could also help raise more money
since I'm sure it was a nice chunk of their donation change to buy/turn on 91.7. Seems like the right thing to do.

The "Listen Now" button on their website that links to their Live365 web-stream DOES mention the 102.5 translator in Whiting ..
I recently contacted GM Bob Wick about the Whiting translator and he said they are going to keep it for "a number of reasons", though he wouldn't elaborate ..
Might have to dig for more info on that ..

WYRS and WLNJ

Bob and Nancy Wick have captured the hearts of many listeners in this region.
Their steadfastness to the mission is what drives this great couple. While the
discussion about coverage, revenue and frequencies are interesting, we
share the same standard as Hebrew National : We answer to a Higher Calling.
Bob continues to reach many silent listeners and they certainly put their money
where their heart is. As for his engineering prowess, Bob is among the best in the
industry. And fortunately with digital scanning in autos, jumping from signal to signal
is absolutely no problem.

It is their money to burn

I could DX this from NE Philly. If only there was a better coverage map, FCC one had returned an error.
