WBNS and WTVN duke it out for a translator.

Latest FCC filings show in the last round of AM revitalization translator window the following happened:

97.5 248D TRANSLATOR WTVN (AM) NEW COLUMBUS OH

97.5 248D TRANSLATOR WBNS (AM) NEW COLUMBUS OH

I wonder what the folks who run WOBN at Otterbein think?

Even through WOBN-FM is a Class D, it's has priority over translators. From the FCC "NCE-FM radio stations will continue to be protected to their predicted 1 mV/m contours rather than to their predicted 0.5 mV/m Contours." We would have to see where where they propose to place the tower, height, and power, to see if there's any chance for interference to WOBN.

Looking at the 2 applications, they are protecting WOBN, so there shouldn't be any interference. However, if someone is driving up to Westerville listening to one of the stations and it fades from one to WOBN, that'll be good for them!

That's very true. I didn't look in depth at the applications until I had posted - but your right. My only fear is interference to WOBN even with the null given WOBN doesn't have much height.

If WTVN gets an LP translator, what a waste. They don't need a translator for those areas already super-served by that night signal. A full-power FM that is heard well in the areas covered by their very good nulls after dark would be ideal.
Not really even sure WBNS-AM needs a translator. Their most desirable programming, i.e. OSU football and men's basketball, is already heard on 97.1.

On another post, iHeart is applying for a LPFM translator for WHAS-AM in Louisville.... I wonder if they are trying to get certain AM stations on the FM band??? Kind of a waste since WHAS is a 50,000watt clear channel station... However, it would sound better. I remember the first time I heard them in HD.. .I said "wow! That's how it sounds in the studio!"

Wouldn't surprise me ... WLW has had a translator for years and it's as 50,000-watt clear channel as you can get. WLW and WHAS have something WTVN does not, that being a non-directional signal 24/7. That's where my issue falls with this translator. Instead of filling in coverage deficiencies after dark, they're going to plop the powerful 610 signal on an LPFM that will serve an area already blanketed by an excellent signal 24/7. That has long been the biggest reason I'd love to see one of iHeart's FM's simulcast 610 at all hours (more than on 93.3's HD2 signal as the case is now).

There is no such thing as an "LPFM Translator", the LPFM service and translators are completely different. Yes, even 50,000 stations are getting translators for better downtown coverage, or just because people aren't turning on FM.
