WBNS-FM ratings

Their 2.6 Trend has to be the lowest this station has ever registered. These ratings are getting scary low. The Wolf family can't be happy at all. I can remember when they did 6 shares as Oldies. It looks like someone is taking away their listeners. Although, this 2.6 was achieved without a permanent morning show in place, but still, a 2.6? If I was them, i'd try to be more like Q102 in Cincinnati. Also, dump the 80s. They're tired, dull, and boring. Go 90s and now.

Let the morning show establish...the rest may well fal into place. A preceptual might be in order, but do they have the budget for that?

Hmmm, I was thinking dump the 90s. A good portion of the 90s was so lame. ;) Just go 80s and Today! To each his own.

Except for their morning show and when they play sporting events, I do listen to WBNS-FM. Nothing against their morning folks, its just I'm listening to news in the morning. As for the sporting events, I think it is the worst use of the FM spectrum, and the station isn't even a Talk/Sports format. Let's listen again to that football pass again in Stereo. Wow, wasn't that amazing. ::) If you want to lose your music listening audience, keep playing sporting events, your audience will find another station that will be happy to supply their music fix.

WBNS is a great station, and they have a killer signal, they should go similar to Q102 in Cincy and just call it, Columbus' Hit Music - 90's and Now - Mix 97-1

Wrong, Alan. The last book (or maybe it was the second to last book) WBNS had when it was competing with WCOL for oldies was a whopping 1.9 share 12 plus. And, they only did a 6 share as oldies once. Most of the time, they were in the 4's...

I think the willingness to run OSU games on the FM is how they keep that contract. I know Clear Channel's tried to get the OSU PxP back the last couple times it went up for bid.

The Wolf family is by far much larger fans of the bucks than the Bain family.

Not that this is the issue, but yes, to keep the franchise, they have to sacrifice programming on the FM. But really, its not a ton.

Plus owning the franchise in town helps pay the bills and gives 10TV a nice little one two punch overall.

As I understand it, OSU desired an FM outlet for their games. That's not unusual. These days, quite a number of colleges look for FM outlets. AM only attracts largely people over 50. Some in their 20's and 30's will not listen to an AM station to get the games...they'll go to a bar and watch it on TV. But, some younger people are attracted to game radio broadcasts if they are on FM...

Now I understand. I doubt some in their 20s have ever listened to AM, and if they are still in their teens, they may not even know what AM is. And of course if it is a night game, AM signals can be a pain after the sun goes down.

As for the music, I'm guessing as we are heading into the 2010's, that BNS is looking to fade the 80s out, as it may not be "cool" to be spanning 4 decades. What would they call it, 90's, 00's, Now?

So many people are saying, "dump the eighties," but 97.1 was doing better when they played more eighties.

Why don't they try something similar to what WMMX Dayton has been doing with so much success?  MMX is a perennial ratings powerhouse, but neither 97.1, nor any other Columbus station, has ever had a music profile remotely resembling it:  gold-heavy but extremely upbeat and fairly rock-leaning.  That approach sounds like hard rock compared to SNY or LZT, and could pull from them.  Or maybe something like WMVX Cleveland would work here.  Again, no station has ever tried anything like it in Columbus.

BTW, remember a few years ago when BNS tried Saturday Night 90's and it was a big failure?  Or when they added 90's to Friday 80's mix and had to quickly dump them and go back to 100% 80's?  90's-focused formats just haven't been successful, for whatever reason.

It's conceivable 97.1 could do well with something 00's and current-oriented, but NCI remains such a powerhouse with adults despite being a CHR.  The more 97.1 tries to focus on inching in a CHR direction, the more they fail.  Just because Hot AC playlists have been headed in that kind of direction nationally doesn't mean it makes the most sense in the context of 97.1's competitive landscape.  Instead, it's time to really shift gears and first try going for a more-open territory, such as what an MMX-like approach would cover. It's not as if they would have much to lose; they're not even performing in-demo.

Jason, thanks for the heads-up on 'BNS-FM's ratings when they were Oldies. I was unaware of that, due to the fact that i've only been following Columbus ratings since 2000.
It is kinda tough for a Hot AC to compete with WNCI in Columbus...'NCI doesn't play too much rap like Channel 94.5 in Dayton, so they're more of a Hot AC-leaning Pop CHR. I've only heard 'NCI spin two or three rap-sounding songs, which are Ray J's "Sexy Can I?", T-Pain's "Buy U A Drank", and Plies "Bust It Baby Part II".
Also, there were lame songs in the 90s, but there were lame songs in the 80s as well. I stand by my statement that there are a lot of "Oh, wow!" 90s tunes out there. Check out Joe Boxer Noon-1 PM weekdays on 'NCI and you'll know what I mean. 'NCI even spun some of them this past 4th of July weekend.
Also...let's not forget that the late, great 80s station Star 107.9 even did a 90s show called "Edge of 80s" on Friday nights.

Yea, there were some really good songs in the 90s, I'll admit that. And you are right, the 80s has some lame ducks too.

As for STAR 107.9 and Edge of 80s, it is back on STAR1079.com. Started up again about 4 or 5 weeks ago when they had their 10 year Anniversary, Friday nights at midnight for 1 hour, late 80s and early 90s.

Perhaps it should go back to what was being played in the early days of this format, when it was "More Music, More Variety."

More like "90's and Now", but you've just about got it on the head, Vince.

Well, as someone who is painfully aware of how things work at WBNS, it goes something like this: They want to play the game but they don't want to invest but only so much..just enough to make the Top 5 buys. Upper management will o-k some dollars for marketing but again, only just enough to make the top 5 buys. They are a very cautious bunch and need to have their hands held when jumping off into the unknown(eg a new format). They don't know what to make of talent. They would much rather hire a proven entity than develop their own. They will sometimes (in the case of morning shows) make a run at a known, proven talent and then give them no help. Their theory is it's up to them entirely. Then when that doesn't work, they just find another victim. In terms of their overall market share and competitiveness...They do just enough. That's what they did with Oldies, that's what they're doing with Hot A/C. Since that's not working anymore, I'm guessing they'll find another hole and try to fill it, improve their cume and get a bounce and then fall back down again when they milk that one dry...and so on and so on...

I think you hit this one on the screws and knocked it way out.

I've had several acquaintances over the years who have said almost identical things concerning their mindset.

Sad.

I was in Denver recently and was impressed with Alice 105.9 www.alice1059.com; they have a good upbeat morning show, and a upbeat afternoon show. They border on lifestyle talk IMO, but play a fair amount of CHR / AC. I checked their ratings and they are usually in the mid to high 3's, much better rated station then there main competitor Mix 100, which is the station where Columbus vetern Jane London does mornings. Mix in Denver is much like 97.1 here, dull, predictable, and boring, filled with too much 80's music. Mix 100, KIMN in Denver also uses the slogan "90's, 80's, and Now". I did think when I was in Denver listening to Alice, "Columbus could use a station like this". As far as the rest of the Denver market their newstalkers 850 KOA and 630 KHOW make WTVN look awesome, while their country giant KYGO is better programmed and the personalities more upbeat then WCOL. As much as WNCI gets on my nerves sometimes, after being in Denver and them not having a station anything like WNCI, I kinda began to miss WNCI after a few days.
