WBNS-FM tanks in the Spring Book

Unless we have a misprint on our hands, WBNS-FM has dropped to a 0.8 in the Spring Book. It says the AM had a 2.9. This can't be sitting well with any of the Wolfe family. Even if the FM got a 2.9 and the AM got the 0.8, that's still one poor rating for a 20,000 watt signal.

Assuming this was more of a financially motivated decision (than ratings motivated) I doubt they are too upset. If they were concerned with the ratings of two stations, you would probably hear them promote the AM signal a little more throughout the day. No, I am sure they are not too worried about their decision at this point. We will see what happens in the fall and winter trends after the Buckeyes play USC (night game) and more than just 13 people can hear the radio broadcast.

The decision to go all sports wouldn't have much effect on OSU games because the FM has always carried them regardless of format. Still, a 0.8 is terrible for a huge signal like 97.1. What a waste of 20,000 watts. :'(

True. Touche. However, I would be surprised if this was NOT a mis-print considering how little the AM is promoted. I would assume the numbers are flipped as you suggested previously. I am not sure that I have heard WBNS-AM promoted on the FM dial since the flip. It has been more likely to hear them "poke-fun" at fuddy duddy listening on AM. It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to make that .8 a .0, and then either sell the station or flip it.

2.9 share makes more sense than 0.8 share for The Fan 97.1. I'm guessing that the Wolfe family are happy with The Fan FM ratings. The highest share that The Fan AM ever got was little over a 2 share.

In Fall 08 The Fan AM had a 3.4. Found this in the ratings section.

Hey alan, what year is it? 1985? No, it's 2009. Your thinking of FM Talk as a waste is as dated as parachute pants. WXYT-FM in Detroit is the #3 station in the market. Before they moved the sports format to FM, the AM was like #20 with a 1.0 share. I don't know if you know it or not, but young people don't really tune to AM much. Sure, the sports stations in most markets get a decent 18-34 male number at times, but nothing like they get at WXYT on a full market FM signal. WBNS-FM dropping from a 3.4 to a 2.9 is nothing. That's almost flat. Plus, it's 12+! Who cares? Do you know what they did M18-34? M25-49? M25-54? Did they do well with WOMEN on the FM? Why do you think CBS is flipping so many of their former music stations to sports? $$$$! That's why!

Hate to tell you this, but AM isn't going to make it with the ipod generation. That's why AM news/talk stations are migrating to FM when it can be done. And, it's NOT a waste. Please, don't use WTDA as an example either. It doesn't matter whether it's music or talk, if you don't do it right and you don't have a signal, you're not going to perform. Look at stations with decent numbers: WPGB, WIBC, KFTK, WWTN, KSL-AM/FM, WHIO-AM/FM, KTLK-FM...And there are plenty more to come. ANd please don't count the new wave of crappy TRN-based stations either. Nonstop syndication does nothing but a 1.0 share.

Elephant, results in other markets are irrelevant to most of the managers controlling Columbus's limited number of good signals -- especially CC/Columbus. They prefer instead to stick to more tried-and-true, proven decison-making criteria such as carrying out vendettas and avoiding too-hip-for-the-room formats like Classic Hits.

WTDA-FM/103.9 Westerville/Columbus, come on down! We're calling YOU!

:D

(Though if the ratings out there are accurate, it appears the Not-So-Mighty "Talk FM" isn't even reaching THAT low bar these days...)

You make a great point. You can't just throw a syndicated talk lineup on a bad rimshot FM and expect to get ratings...even with one or two semi-high profile hosts (TRN's Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham).

I'm waiting to see which FM eventually flips to WTVN-FM. 93.3? 106.9? When you've got powerhouses like WCOL and WNCI in your stable, there's not much room for an FM talk flip discussion. But my gut tells me that 'TVN will have an FM simulcaster at some point, assuming 610 stays as is.

Yes, Nu_Roo, I see you up there...but we've kicked this one around to what I believe is a decent stalemate.

Well, at least you put me "up" instead of down ;)

EDIT: Is it just my pc, or are the emoticons broken??
