WBNS Is Kidding, Right?

c'mon, it was an exhastive nationwide search for a new host plus a real feather in their cap for getting a Cleveland Plain Dealer sports writer to give up his journalistic career to become the new host of the Big Show. After all who would know more about hosting a sports radio show than a newspaper reporter???. Or, maybe the thinking was anybody but Rimmer !

I go along with the "anyone but Rimer" rationale. I wasn't much of a fan of Hooley with Spielman but I do like Hooley in general. He can be kind of a cry-baby at times which grates on my nerves and like any other media personality tries to make things bigger than they really are but on the whole he is somewhat enjoyable.

I am just a little confused why Hooley got the gig when he has been on "The Big Show" all of maybe once or twice before the announcement. Oh well, at least we don't have to listen to interviews with 90-year-old baseball "legends" that started for a Triple-A affiliate in rural Minnesota or some other crap Rimer thought the people of Columbus might be interested in.

1460 is a horrible horrible excuse for a sports radio station....with this format you would think they would want to skewer younger to attract the 25-54 male, but no...everything they do screams "old guy radio"....they had the right guy doing the show---Ricordati---but they cant handle some "young punk" ripping on The Ohio State University...Hooley is ok, but a horrible personality to base your drive time on....and what about Spiels...he showed his true colors by quitting as coach of the Destroyers and then letting his agent do the talking for him....1460 needs to just give up and run Romie on tape delay from 4-7pm...

Well all due respect to Spielman but his football career and his radio career are two separate entities. Not only that but he resigned because of loyalty to an assistant coach who he thought was getting screwed needlessly. I respect the guy for doing things that normal people don't have the nerve to do. He walks away from a football career in the NFL to be with his wife when she needed a husband. Now he walks away from a career that he longed for and he desperately wants to succeed at because of his principles. Sure it wasn't a popular move but at the end of the day he has to look at himself in the mirror and be happy with his life choices. The fans aren't owed anything and let's be honest, he wasn't the greatest coach anyway.

Anyway back to the topic at hand, I think 1460 is thumbing their nose at Rome/Westwood One/CC for stripping him from the station to begin with. I think there is probably bad blood there and I don't really expect to hear Rome back on The Fan.

Obviously, the GM Van Stone is doing his normal m.o. keeping his door closed and not talking to anyone. Maybe he should walk down the hall and and see what's going on. He would find out that 1460 The FAN has flamed out. They reall need a new direction. This station is part of the Wolf family stable of businesses. WBNS-AM has been this way for quite some time, just different players and different directions. If have no intention of making it real, professional and competitive why don't they get some talking head to read the Dispatch papers over the air and save the embarrassment. Dave Kaylor maybe?

I agree. You have to wonder two things. 1, whey the PD position keeps changing and 2, whey was it so hard to find someone to come to the 31 or so market to host an afternoon drivetime show on the OSU flagship? Does this town have enough sports interest (there's more than OSU football) to even support so much local sports talk?

Maybe IBOC will save WBNS too!!!!! SMILE

Believe what you want about Spielman's motives for quitting. To me it looks like a real convenient excuse for somebody looking for a way out of a situation in which he was way over his head. "Not a great coach?" That's and understatement, and anybody with any sense at all could tell that the owner's were right, the assistants needed to go. Spielman probably should have too, but he puts butts in the seats. And you're so right that Spielman's radio career and football career are two separate things. Maybe he should have left well enough alone and laid back on his old playing days at OSU, instead of spewing his ignorant, sexist crap on the air everyday for an hour.

What the heck, a year from now the Destroyers will be gone again and WBNS will still be a minor media player in a market run by Ohio State football.
