Hardrocker-
Rock radio in New York is non existant. Free FM is eliminating music from the format for the most part. Active Rock is the plan that I had for the Bone when I took the reigns. You saw me add Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle, Velvet Revolver, Audioslave and artists of that Genre. The moves were questioned in the begining because they were not safe. I was ordered to put in Piano Man Blinded By The Light, Born To Run and songs like that to offset the hard nature of the music. The edgier music is what made the Bone different. It forced the competition to add certain songs that they were never playing before.
It was obvious back in 2004 that Active Rock would thrive on Long Island. The classic rockers replaced the oldies stations as the oldies stations died off. The "circle of life" so to say... Guys 25-45 Want to hear the older stuff, but they love hearing the newer rock too.
Too bad no one else saw what was so evident. The immortal words of the Who describes the scene...
"The place is really jumping to the Hiwatt amps,
'Til a 20-inch cymbal fell and cut the lamps,
In the blackout they dance right into the aisle,
And as the doors fly open even the promoter smiles,
Someone takes his pants off and the rafters knock,
Rock is dead, they say,
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock."
Someone with some balls needs to step up and put an active rock/familiar rock station hybrid on the air that covers NY and Long Island. If the signal is strong enough to compete with the larger stations, if they market and promote just a little and not automate key dayparts, the station will generate the revenue and the ratings.
As much as we all love radio and love playing "armchair PD" the bottom line is the bottom line...CASH IS KING! If you can make it ,you are a success, and if you fall short...well you are News Talk, Fresh FM or some other S**TTY formatic invented by a some simpleton 2,500 miles away.
Marconi in Heaven have mercy on the state of NY and LI radio!
