WBOQ: Programmed in-house?

Lately, when I've been in the Boston area, I've found myself enjoying WBOQ's oldies more than I do WODS's. True, 'BOQ's playlist doesn't include much rock, but at least it still includes '50s and early '60s Elvis/Everlys/Four Seasons material that 'ODS won't touch anymore. I even hear quite a few '60s and '70s songs that don't make the standard tight oldies playlist that 'ODS sticks to.

Is 'BOQ programmed in-house, or is its music package found on other AC-leaning oldies stations around the country?

I don't know whether their music library originated in-house or not, but I heard from someone who was there that they are now making their own additions and updates to it in-house, so I'm not sure if they created their format, or if they're doing their own tweaks to an outside package.

They do seem to try to provide something different than what is offered on WODS. It's interesting because there's a good amount of pre-'64 stuff that 'ODS used to play but dropped, then with the later 60's and the 70's they seem to be finding a lot of popular hits that are outside of WODS's overplayed core, then they occasionally may jump up to some AC track from the 80's or even the 90's.

Over fifteen years ago, WODS killed off any smaller standard playlist Oldies stations trying to operate within the shadow of their big signal. Stations like WBOQ and WATD in Marshfield, which is gold-based AC days and specialty oldies shows evenings, overnights and weekends, seem to know that they have to offer something different to Oldies fans.

And 'BOQ continues to carry the Red Sox, too; at least till the end of
this season. Not sure whether they'd be asked to continue running them
if the Sox get their own outlet, etc.<P ID="signature">______________

And indeed have to in order to survive. WODS puts a strong signal into both the north & south shores. Why would anyone listen to a suburban Class A that was doing the exact same thing as a major market flamethrower? The trick is to find the right balance between finding something different enough to attract an audience without going off the deep end and being too obscure.

It's all programmed in-house by the PD - he's an oldies-market veteran.

Glad to hear you like the station.
