I realize I’m not as eloquent as Rapking :), but I have to agree about WBOS.

They were ratings challenged as WBOS and they are still ratings challenged as Radio 92.9. When they blew out the staff but kept Dana Marshall who espoused in the papers at the time that listeners wanted less blah, blah, blah…I had to laugh. Of all the previous jocks on WBOS, she not only talked the most but most of her conversation was usually nonsense that added nothing to the show or the music. Joanne Doody was a far better mid-day personality for WBOS and actually added value to her conversation with the listeners.

Yes, I know that without a staff that the overhead is much lower but if you believe the behind the scenes talk, their Ad revenue has declined precipitously.

IMHO, they would have been better off leaving the format as it was and replace Dana Marshall.

Cut rate radio, can (almost) all the DJs (including Holly Harris' blues show), and do Ipod radio. If it's good enough for "Mike" and Entercom...

As for ratings I don't know the 25-54s but you can see the 12-plus at radioandrecords.com; last time (next
results come out Sat.), Mike and 'BOS were 16th and 17th overall and you can see the numbers they got at that site. Actually given the fact that expenses are low w/ the jockless format (I think WBOS still has one
jock, though, right? on weekends) they at least show up as middle of the pack and maybe that's good
enough for Entercom & Greater, respectively.

There have been three formats on 92.9 WBOS that were successful. Their run as a "disco" dancemusic station in the late 70s (I believe Ron Robin was involved with that one) did fairly well. In the mid 80s, Sconnix did country on WBOS and had its best 12+ numbers ever (around a four share as I recall). Then there was Granum's Rock AC "Soft Album Rock" format (a classic-based version of AAA), which doubled Ackerley's share (the Tom Sandman era "Rock Without The Hard Edge" format) from 1991 to 92, reaching a 3.7 12+ in Fall 92. Greater Media would never bring that format back...it was giving Magic fits. If Granum had paired 92.9 with 92.5 as they were counseled to do back then, the AAA WBOS would have survived and even flourished, as WXRV never would have happened. There is no room for two of these in any market.

92.9 does appear to be one of those jinxed frequencies.

Remember Maxanne Satori's New Rock experiment on WBOS around 1983 ? At the height of new wave music's popularity, that incarnation of WBOS was starting to gain some traction when Sconnix pulled the plug and went country. Methinks that 4 share was actually Maxanne's book that came out right after Sconnix flipped it.

WBOS was amazing during the spring/early summer of 1983! Prior to that, Jerry Goodwin was the PD and morning show host there for a few months too...

I remember Maxanne's format. I was in Pittsburgh at the time, and WYDD there was doing a similar thing. Loved both of those stations.

WBOS' country 4 share was around 1987-88. A guy I used to work with in '86, Dave Coombs, went there and was part of the morning show at the time.

as I stated earlier in this post (as an idea) They should put "HOT Country" (Dial-Global.com) on that station, have (Syndicated Countdowns and Syndicated New Music Shows on the weekends) This is just an idea.

Another idea would be, they should change to "Smooth Hitz" Play All NEW Soul, New AC Music, and HOT New Country. That's another idea. (yes go up against Magic 106.7) but in this case, play (ALLLLLLL NEW!!!!!!) music, and have some (Syndicated R&B Radio Shows on the weekends-1. Sol Cafe-Superadio, 2. Soul Lounge-Eadioexpress.com, 3 Hollywood Confidential-Unitedstations.com). That's just an idea.

As I also said earlier, so far, WBOS sounds ok.

I also enjoyed Maxanne's "New Rock" format (which also played some really cool "old" rock too), but in the short time it was on, it never pulled significant ratings against WBCN. The 4 share for Country was a few years later.

WBOS and WMJX Magic 106.7 are both owned by the same company, Greater Media. They wouldn't program WBOS to compete against Magic, which is now #1 in the ratings 12+. Magic is their cash cow, they wouldn't want to jeopardize that by competing against it with one of their own stations.

That's why WBOS didn't stay with their original, somewhat successful version of soft AAA ("Rock Without the Hard Edge") after Greater Media bought it. It was competition to WMJX, so WBOS went to a new wave, alt-rock and classic rock version of AAA, which never achieved very good ratings against all of Boston's competing rock stations.

you right on my quote,
it was just ideas

My memory is a bit foggy these days on radio's past, however didn't WBOS not go towards New Wave and Classic Rock until about 2003 or 2004 or so? I forget who came to the station back then, however he made a huge difference in the stations direction.

BTW, when Greater Media first took over WBOS, they went pseudo Modern AC. They were playing most of the songs that Mix was playing, but in a different order. Basically Mix was 2 up tunes and 1 or 2 slower tunes. WBOS was playing 2-3 slow tunes with one up tune in the mix also.

The station always struck me as always being half way decent, but it was back in 2003 or 2004 when it got its own uniqueness. Its too bad that Greater Media couldn't give the station enough time to please the shareholders. :(

Its a good station but I think everyone here will agree with me when I say BRING BACK THE JOCKS! These dam mike fm's are taking our jobs!

Good station but the format may not stick around for this much longer. Everyone is just laying low and waiting around to see what happens when PPMs come. We may see a lot of programming changes all over local FM in '09.

Today was the last paper and pencil day. Forever.

Well sais @ActionJax, "Bring Back The Jocks"
Which radio announcer did you all like on WBOS?
I liked Dominique, and David O'Leary. I used to call both to find out the name of the last song that they played, they were very helpful and very friendly people. (Bring Back The Jocks!!!!)
