WBOS Format Flip

WBOS flips to classic alternative? Is this a stunt or for real?

Are all the jocks gone? Radio 929? Copying the Star in LA, WRFF in Philly format?

Does this market need another station playing Smashing Pumpkins?

Looking at their playlist on yes.com, I think the flip must have happened at 5. I guess their target is FNX? If that's the case, I guess they're not really looking to improve their ratings. The website says less talk, not no talk, so maybe the airstaff, either the same one, or different will be brought back eventually.

According to Radio and Records:

Greater Media triple A WBOS/Boston relaunched as Radio 92.9 WBOS at 6 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 1). The new approach appears to be a triple A and alternative hybrid, or adult alternative.

The station's Web site states, "Want more music and less talk? Then 92.9 is the only place on the dial to get exactly that! Radio 92.9 brings you the best music from artists you love -- Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Pearl Jam, the Dave Matthews Band and many more."

...You mean they didn't play those bands already?

So, they've changed from Adult Alternative to... Young Adult Alternative?
Seems more like a tweaking than a format flip to me.

No Flip here , What a waste . If Jamn add more Hip Hop to their playlist , is that a flip ? NO !

I listened to WBOS off and on during November and December (while sampling different stations during the 2007 WODS/WROR Christmas Tango) and I've been listening (online) for the past half hour or so. I can't say it's changed that much.

They are playing some stuff I don't mind listening to and playing some other stuff that would make me hit the scanner while driving which is exactly how I took them back in November and December. Only change is that they are currently jockless.

I was wondering when '90s oldies stations would appear. Looks like we've got one! Though some of those artists/bands mentioned are still active, they were all big in the '90s.

There are no programming or scheduling details on the website yet. I wonder if Holly Harris gets to keep her Sunday evening blues show?

whenever you go for a different demo, it's technically a flip. the beasties and fat boy slim is not exactly cutting edge radio, they now sound like one of those digital music stations on your cable tv. good background crap. no dj's, no personality. lame. but what else were they were going to do?! sports? at least they don't have much overhead playing talking heads and bob marley a 100 times a day.

it's all pre-tested top 40 altenrative crap from last three decades you already heard a million times before.

I'm listening, and think WBOS might really be filling a format hole here.. Harder than WXRV, softer than WBCN/WFNX. It could work.

According to Boston Radio Watch: "WBOS switches to alternative rock with a classic tag

Just when you thought Boston radio dial didn’t have room for another rock station, here comes a new entry for the 20 and 30-something rock listeners. If you’re a fan of music and/or artists from the 80’s and 90’s, there’s a new, cool station for you. If you’re from the school of thought that Boston radio is over-rocked and over-rolled and something more diverse and interesting is needed other than yet another trip down music’s memory lane, you’ll be mighty disappointed.

[EDIT]

I'm sad that I didn't get to say goodbye to John Laurenti and the others. They had become phone friends over the past couple of years and now I have no way to reach out to them. If you guys read this board, know that my heart goes out to you and that I hope to be listening to you soon somewhere else. I'm just so tired of losing jocks to automation.

John Laurenti is a close friend of mine. I can confirm he's out. I understand everyone was released.

I left a similar comment on the providence board, but do you think that the new radio 92 will go half jockless? or how will it work now? Do you think any of the guys that got the ever so pleasant Christmass Layoff's will return? More importantly..how will BCN and FNX react to this?

Has Greater Media ever dismissed an entire station staff before? This is very uncharacteristic of them. Really sad.

In Boston, I don't think so - their last flip of this volume happened in 1999 with the launch of WTKK, and they kept smooth jazz running at odd points until they could fully replace the schedule with talk programming. Everyone knew about the flips WKLB/WBCS in 1996 and WCDJ in 1993, so this is really the first time that Greater Media has pulled off a "one day you have a job, next day you don't" scheme. But they've done this plenty of times before in Philly with the dreaded 95.7 there.

Anyone think they'll pick up a new set of calls? The WBOS letters at this point, while heritage and meaningful, are IMHO beyond damaged goods.

Well....at least we won't have to put up with Springsteen, Walking in Memphis, Bruce Hornsby, and others that make me feel like I'm listening to CHUM-FM circa 1986. Sorry, I'm way past that. Nonetheless, as a 37-year-old guy, I liked the general idea of WBOS as it was. It was our family's default station, a stable sound. I've got enough going on my life that I don't need the default station messed with.

Or, maybe I'm part of the problem? My new Volvo came with Sirius and decreased FM quality, and so I'm listening to Sirius stations almost always these days.

Sorry to hear about the fate of lots of good people at a heritage station.

The station will be hyper-focused on music with much less talk. When we looked at the current WBOS playlist and the overall Boston market, we saw an opportunity to cater to our 25-34 listeners with more rock and less pop-cross over. It's a great opportunity for us to fill a void on the Boston radio dial. Examples of artists we will play on WBOS will include Pearl Jam, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Marley and Green Day.

So, someone please remind me what a 37-year-old guy is supposed to listen to in this town, music-wise.

Isn't this WBCN's demo, and how well have they done with that?

Everyone is so sick of Pearl Jam. They were so overrated in the 90s--a US version of Canada's Tragically Hip.

I will have to give the station a listen. I do not think I have listened to WBOS with any consistency for months and months now, so much so that I first heard Colbie Callait on a top 40 station.

WBOS’s music change also means that one-time format rival WXRV 92.5FM/The River becomes the only AAA station in the market and may see the influx of some of the former WBOS listeners.

Yes, "The River" will get some, though their signal is not so great in town and to the south.

It also could be an opening for WUMB, who have announced that they have upcoming changes happening which haven't been specified, though they did announce in a recent news story that they will be dropping their longtime "Folk Radio" branding. They could take this opportunity to become a somewhat rootsy AAA non-comm like WFUV in NYC or the very successful WXPN in Philly, if they can jump on it.

It could also help WERS, whose new format is essentially eclectic AAA. If they focused (mainstreamed) their music a little bit and improved their imaging, with their superior signal in the metro they could become the dominant non-comm AAA without WBOS in the market, if that's what they want to do.
