WBOS Format Flip

I think the purpose of running a Private Equity Firm is to generate wealth. I think that qualifies as greed.

So, anytime anyone invests in the stockmarket to generate wealth it's greaad?

Anytime anyone invests in a business to generate wealth...it's greed?

How about if you put some capital into a CD to generate wealth? Is that greed too?

It's pretty absurd to single out Mitt Romney as being involved in the changes that you describe above. For one thing, Bain Capital hasn't been involved with Clear Channel for very long at all. The deal was done less than a year ago (2007). Secondly, Romney hasn't been with Bain Capital since 1999! Eight years earlier.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to implicate Romney, just the overall handling of the medium by corporate owners. Wasn't suggesting Romney put together the Clear Channel buyout (which hasn't gone through yet, and may not happen). I'm ambivalent towards Mitt Romney, but I give him credit - he's done quite a few things right as Governor of Mass. Notably, surrounded himself with very bright people.

Let's see: Greed (n) "An overwhelming desire to have more of something such as money than is actually needed".
I guess it's all relative. Investing in a CD is probably more about basic survival. But we live in a society that facilitates and worships wealth. We envy people with more than we have, and are willing to dive into debt in order to appear wealthy. If you can get rich by investing, or even just buying a lottery ticket, you on some level are motivated by greed. It's normal, even healthy. Some who are wildly successful can become intoxicated by wealth, and arguably are more greedy than you or I.

But this IS supposed to be a thread about WBOS.. and as far as corporate greed goes - the privately held company that owns WBOS is known to be a paradise of a workplace in the radio industry precisely because they never got bought out. They've invested in their stations rather than sucked them dry, although the pressures we're seeing now (CBS layoffs today, Emmis yesterday, Clear Channel last week..) surely must be hitting Greater Media as well. I wish them well with the new format, which I'm actually beginning to enjoy, but they really do need jocks. The sterile presentation isn't working, but the music is.

"The music is working"

Really? Do tell. The music might have been fine for a 22-year-old fifteen years ago, but the fallacy is that that same individual likes the same songs and sound they do now.

They don't. People mature. The songs sound old, too hard, and are uninteresting, as we're all bored of this material and need something new for our current lifestyles.

OK WBOS is never gonna be my #1 choice. I just enjoyed a set in the car the other day, when something new played. About 20% of the music seems out of place, especially all the Barenaked Ladies music. Doesn't fit at all.
