WBOT Hot 97.7

In 2008 a site went up saying a station called "Hot 97" would be making its debut on 97.1
in Boston. Yeah, right next to WTKK-- I noted at the time that the site had a "countdown"
to the launch, and if they did launch I doubt it was on 97.1

>>http://www.hot97boston.com/ "Ain't no stoppin' us now" (a midi file of the McFadden & Whitehead hit) plays in the background as
this apparent pirate station "counts down" to its debut (49 days from now)

(9/12/08)

Clicking that link DOES take you a site Hot 97 Boston.com (Copyright 2012, at the bottom) and they have twitter and facebook etc--wasn't this the one at 87.7 that got taken off (or is it
really back on, April Fool or not?)

Entercom probably won't give up modern rock on 97.7... and any of the FMs would be prohibitively expensive for a minority owner at this time :)

Still, surprised there's two Spanish AMs but not a single licensed urban on either band :)

That's true and for some on this board who wish they would switch 97.7 to CHurban, etc.,
it's unlikely to happen. 97.7 is needed for getting WAAF into Boston, and they make money
with it. They also make money with WEEI and had to sacrifice Mike to get them on FM.
Admittedly they lost the revenue stream of Mike but something had to be done. Maybe if
RKO turns out to be a money-loser they could consider switching that to black-oriented,
ethnic, brokered, etc. (They must be doing halfway decent to keep it as is. But the money
comes from EEI and AAF.)

>>Sup with the station, cats didn't pay the rent????
>>fix your f-- radio station im sick of listening to jamn
>>all of a sudden your station wont play on my radio anymore!!! Am i the only one?
>>Ok. Is it me? For a minute now, the station won't come in? All I'm getting is static. What is going on? Honestly? Is it just me? Just Dorchester? Confused.

there's way too many Rock and Roll stations!!!!
Put something else, Urban AC, NEW Country, News/Sports Talk Station/Entertainment Talk station, anything other than Rock and Roll!!!

oh, like WKLB, WTKK, WXKS, WRKO, WEEI, WEEI-FM, etc?

The only thing missing is Urban AC, and I'm not having that battle again.

Hi LAURO,
I would love to see a local Urban AC or at least Jam'n 94.5 play more old school music more often. 103.3 WODS is even starting to play more rock classic hits. Forget 105.7 WROR, they are sounding more like another ZLX, what's the point? "Easy" 99.1 sounds like they don't know which direction to go. I like 630 WPRO and 1030 WBZ for local talk and news when not listening to music. We have two choices for other music formats, internet and satellite radio.

If WPOT 87.7 was rated, I'm sure they'd cume about 300,000-500,000 and have a 1.0 share. That's with a weaker signal and the 87.7 frequency. Pulse 87.7 in NYC had the same handicaps and had a million cume and 1.0 share.

See, what Entercom Program Management should do is put "Funkytown 93.7 HD2" put that on 97.7, call it "Funkytown 97.7" If they can't afford radio hosts. Fine! At least put on ?? "Steve Harvey Morning Show" weekdays, and put "Keith Sweat Hotel" Monday-Thursday nights. Other than that, put on some Urban AC weekend shows.

Either that

or

Magic 106.7 (since) they advertise their station on the MBTA Buses, and the MBTA Buses travel through Urban Neighborhoods such as Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury, as I said before, Program Management at Greater Media should consider playing more Urban AC. I'm not saying change their format, but consider people in that neighborhoods who see their advertisements.

At my weekday job, I work at one of those Urban Neighborhood cities, in our company (a Medical Practice), there's a room with a Stereo set to (Magic 106.7) There are a lot of African American people, and Caribbean people working here as well as the patients. In my office, I have a few African American woman who goes to a Baptist Church, one goes to a Pentacostal church. They like (some) of Magic 106.7 music. My thing is, Program Management has to stop being afraid to try new things.
Back around 1990, 1991, 1992....until ? 2003, they used to play a lot of Lionel Richie, Toni Braxton, Tina Turner, Hi Five, Johnny Gil, Luther Vandros, Freddy Jackson. Now, I hardly never hear any of them anymore.

As long as WAAF makes money for them they won't change; but who knows, maybe someday (like if they somehow buy another FM in town). There's actually less rock-pop in town since they changed Mike to WEEI-FM. I know you like the type of music you say and yes maybe it could
make money, but they haven't been convinced so far to abandon what they're doing on 97.7.

It's all due to the economy, what the majority of people want, where advertisers want to put their
spots on, etc. For example look up at Burlington VT where "active rock" WIER 102.3 (for years
a country station) is now Mix 102.3. Reason? When a Montreal station (92.5) changed their
music mix, WEZF 92.9 decided to go after their listeners, abandoning adult contemp for hot AC.
In turn, WIER changed to Adult Contemp. from "active rock".

So fans of rocker "The Wire" now have one less choice for rock (they do have WBTZ 99.9 and
also classic rock WIZN 106.7) because the owners of "The Wire" felt a "mix" format would attract
more listeners. (Maybe more female-oriented...

That's where the money is, up there in the Champlain Valley.

>>what Entercom Program Management should do is put "Funkytown 93.7 HD2" put that on 97.7, call it "Funkytown 97.7"

I think Kiss 108 should change to Classic Country. Yessir, a lil' Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton,
Porter Wagoner, yeah! Oh wait...you're telling me that what they're playing now attracts
a lot of listeners and makes them money, and I'm just one person who thinks they should
play what I want? Well, you get my drift. WAAF and WKAF are playing what a lot of people
want. People with money who will frequent advertisers, and that's why Ent. bought the 97.7:
to help get the WAAF signal into town. A few years back, Ent. bought 93.7 and figured they'd
throw a music format on it--stuff like Star, then Mike. Then whaddaya know, they realized
they needed an "FM home for WEEI" so it went there. In retrospect, Ent. made the right
move by getting a half decent FM signal, to make them money.

Would a switch to Billy Ocean, etc., make them money? Maybe, but it would be tougher
for WAAF listeners to hear in certain areas. They already lost some potential ad dollars
by sacrificing Mike to simulcast WEEI (but they had to do something). Would they gain
listeners at a 97.7 playing "funkytown"? Possibly. Would they lose listeners who can't
pick up WAAF too well, and are relying on 97.7? Definitely.

Now again if they could find another FM to buy in town, maybe they could put Funkytown
there or even bring back "Mike", but 97.7 is the simulcast of WAAF and it makes them money.

Check out the ratings (6 plus) on this page. Note where WAAF is...yes it could be higher
but not too bad. Note that these ratings include the WKAF 97.7 simulcast. Where would
WAAF be if it were just on 107.3? A lot lower.

Just deal with the main signal, within the red circle. WKAF helps them get closer to Boston, etc.
than just the WAAF signal.

Towns I've seen MBTA buses in: Newton, Brookline, Marblehead, Swampscott, Needham...
