WBQK, for those who don't live in Williamsburg-West Point is the new Classical station on 107.9. Note to Davis Media, you are not going to like what I make of this change. In Washington DC, they have a commerical classical station that is very popular, well it has to be, WETA is all NPR news-talk. Bach 107.9 makes no sense to me, given that WHRO 90.3 sends a great signal to Williamsburg. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of having a commerical classical station to help bring out classical music to form from NPR talk. That being said though, Hampton Roads(including Williamsburg) has WHRV for NPR-talk-news and WHRO for classical music.
I think that 107.9 is going through a major identity crisis if anything else. Take a good look at what the longtime country station has done. It's gone through a simulcast of AAA, Hip-Hop, Soft AC and also oldies since leaving it's longtime country format. Sure, given that it's located in West Point isn't helping matters, West Point is stuck in between markets, just like WWUZ out of Bowling Green.
Now to get out of this funk that Davis is in, I would do something to boost up listenership. Hot's relay left out Hampton unless you were listening online. 107.9 doesn't reach out to Hampton, neither does 102.1 due to WRXL's signal. I would discuss with Sinclair Communications to simulcast 106.1 the Zone on 107.9. 107.9 could become the Williamsburg relay to this station and give it a signal stretch to cover the Hampton Roads area. It would give 107.9 a good use as they are the feed that helps Sinclair compete with Z104. Not saying that the zone will knock off Z, but it should help them ratings wise if Zone can get a relay on 107.9 and get full area coverage.
As for Bach, well it won't last long, due to lack of coverage and also WHRV being the classical music authority in Hampton Roads.
