WBRU Message

"WBRU would like to thank all of our dedicated listeners. It's been a wonderful 36 years. We will miss you all. Keep rockin'!" - MySpace.com Bulletin from the Official WBRU MySpace Account

Hmm looks like BRU is going off the air?

Weird. Their license expires on April 1st, 2006... then again, so does just about every other radio station in the area... I wonder... did one of those college kids who run the station space out and forget to send the renewal paperwork down to the FCC in Washington? Highly doubtful... Maybe it's a PR stunt... but then... if it were a publicity stunt why is the only mention of it on this board and now on MySpace.com... Wouldn't they publicize it more if it were a stunt? Or maybe they're laying the ground work for one hell of an April Fool's prank... Okay, you've all got me thoroughly confused... I'm going to bed...

Gee, That's stange I just saw a WBRU promotion at the Complex in Providence> Why would you do promotions, just to go off the air.

I've made a few phone calls to people I know in the building. The only one that called me back was unusally tight-lipped, but he did seem pretty po'd about the myspace post.

Nope, they did send it. All AM & FM stations in New England have their licenses expire on April 1, 2006 but they were all required to begin the renewal process by filing for renewal on December 1, 2005...which WBRU did. Check out the FCC's CDBS:

http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_sear.htm

(type in WBRU for call sign and hit enter - a list of (almost) all of the applications they've ever made to the FCC will be in there)

Interestingly, they DID file an amendment to their license renewal just two weeks ago, but there's nothing major in there. It appears they had to do some extra work with WHJY to certify their tower was meeting RF exposure limits, and also that apparently they goofed on the pre- and post-filing on-air announcements about license renewal; but that's not anything bad enough to justify not renewing the license.

Good point on the April Fools Day prank idea, though...I'd almost forgotten it was almost that time. Certainly given that license renewal is going on right now, it would make an effective prank. Also - WBRU 95.5 started in 1966, IIRC...so that would make it 40 years old, not 36.

It was in 1969 when WBRU began its progressive rock format, so that's what they go by when it comes to all the birthday hype that they have around late November/early December.

Pre-Progressive Rock WBRU (was Re: WBRU Message)

Out of curiousity, what did WBRU program prior to its' evolution to Progressive Rock? I know that prior to 1966, 95.5 was Classical formatted WPFM ("Providence's Fine Music Station") in Stereo. The station was given as a gift to Brown University in '66. I'll betcha WBRU was like many of the other Ivy League schools' radio stations with a "block" formatted schedule with Jazz, Classical and a mish-mash of other musical themes. Any takers, here?
