WBSS/WGYM

Looks like hispanic radio has taken a hit once again.....as of Friday WBSS and WGYM are simulcasting News talk 1400 WOND....anyone know what type of format is coming to WBSS/WGYM???

the programming source was provided by the previous owner in long island. personally, i would have put wtku back on it instead. why simulcast what's already available on a stronger signal 90 kc down? put something else on it that's not available on the band that might garner a few wmid listeners and get them to switch to the new fm product. even if it got a .2 rating, it would give them a selling edge and break their tie with wibg-fm. it gives no such financial advantage to wond, it just burns electricity. but, what do i know.

When Howard Green first bought 1490 we temporarily simulcast WOND while the studios for the original WGYM Sports Radio were being built. WFPG-AM called foul on us and we had to switch to simulcasting WMGM because the 1490 contour is completely within that of 1400 so simulcasting was a no-go under the rules.

Did the rules change in the past 13 years? Or is this asking for trouble?

As for 1580, it worked perfectly as a WOND simulcast and that's probably where it should stay for now.

Stations on the same band (an AM and an AM or a FM and a FM) can't simulcast more than 25% of a day's programming if they're within specific contours (something like that). In this case, like you said, WOND and WBSS have the same city of license and come from the same tower (overlapping contours), so it's not permissible.
