I read where WBT was RnR / Top 40 at one time, exactly what year did this Top 40 format start and what year did it end, did they do good in the ratings at this time ?

Not technically Top 40 (although this source says it was), but it was a big shock for people who liked the traditional sound when they changed in 1971.

This is fascinating. it looks like something that would happen today. WBT was number nine, which wouldn't be a big deal today. it used to be number one and would be again/

This was a transformation from the old line MOR programming to a more modern A/C-Oldies (some called it chicken rock, or housewife rock geared more to 18-34 rather than teens) mix in music and execution. Other stations around the country were doing it to varying extents WOWO Fort Wayne, WGAR Cleveland, WGBS Miami, and WGR Buffalo. It attracted those of us who grew up listening to top 40 but were growing out of the typical top 40 sounds and looking for something else. A few more oldies and a bit more personality outside of morning drive.

My early years were spent in Buffalo where I listened mostly to WKBW a top 40 personality powerhouse. In the '70's as top 40 got a bit of a harder edge WGR started playing softer currents with personalities. Had I still been living there WGR would have been my favorite in the '70's.
