WBT-FM Returns To Class C 107.9

I was on a trip in North Carolina in 1997, and we could actually pick up 107.9 very clearly west of Asheville.
That used to be the case. But now there is a NPR station on 107.9 that may interfere around Hendersonville and Asheville. Unfortunately. But back in the day you could even pick up 107.9 from Charlotte in Johnson City, Tennessee and parts of the I-81 corridor, along with 95.1 and 96.1. But I woulld suspect there may be more interference these days.

I would have thought WIVK at 107.7 would cause problems.

The other day, I was able to Hear WSOC 103.7 From Charlotte, on the SDR FM Tuner Bristol TN Server. A bit further east than the WLNK Tower. Says 125 Miles. Slight Tropo, it didn't last very long, but pretty surprising given the mountainous area terrain of East Tennessee.

In the '02-'03 timeframe, I got a handful of Charlotte stations in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Clingman's Dome. I'm sure the altitude had a lot to do with it, though I continued to receive those stations as I descended down on the North Carolina side of the park. I know I didn't get every Charlotte station, though I can't remember exactly which stations I got. I know Kiss 95.1 was one of them. Seems like WPEG 97.9 and WLYT 102.9 were also among the ones I got. I lost all of them very quickly after I changed directions and went back down on the Tennessee side of Clingman's Dome.

I'm pretty sure 107.9 was among the Charlotte stations I didn't get on Clingman's Dome, and that was because of WIVK. Almost seems like WIMZ caused problems for WSOC, too. 96.9 was definitely WXBQ, not WKKT.

I can't get WLNK 107.9 here in northeast Columbia, as there is a Christian LPFM in Lexington on 107.9, WLXM-LP running 18 watts, that blocks it out. By the time I get out to Lugoff I can get it, and can keep it on US 601 from Lugoff on down to the Fort Jackson area.

Early reporting from WBT (which I just happened to have on in my car today) made it sound as though WBT was abandoning 1110 AM in favor of 107.9 FM, but thankfully that's not the case:

WBT Adding Stronger FM Simulcast on 107.9 FM

WBT 1110, if similar simulcasts are any indication, will identify more with the FM. In order to combine the Nielsen Ratings, they will have to simulcast.

I get WBT 1110 most Nights in Michigan. WUNN 1110 Mason, MI and WWMN (Legacy WJML) 1110 Petoskey, MI continue to be Class D to protect WBT and KFAB 1110 Omaha, Nebraska.

They announced this morning on the air that they would simulcast until the end of year.
And what happens then? Or do they mean that they will simulcast on 107.9 and the existing 99.3?

The way they were reporting it today, it sounded as though WBT would be leaving 1110 AM. I have to wonder if perhaps they are going to repurpose 1110, possibly to carry some other station, or maybe do some kind of all-sports thing (or something) the way they did with WCBS 880 in NYC.

It's all very confusing.

WBT is moving to 107.9 only, although they will continue simulcasting on 1110 until early January. Future plans for 1110 should be announced soon.

99.3 will be used in tandem with 100.9 to simulcast the Mix format that is currently on 107.9.

I took my equipment up to the North Carolina side of Clingmans Dome (also known as Kuwohi nowadays), really just a TV set with a rabbit ear, and got Chattanooga stations but not Knoxville. That mountain acts as a real barrier if you are sitting right underneath it (I was on the parking lot). I'd like to take my Clearstream 4-bay antenna up there one of these days.

Many decades ago, late at night on some random Sun or Mon morning, I heard WBT here in SoCal when both KFAB and my local KRLA(1110) happened to be off the air !

Can they still maintain the HD feeds if they convert to mono? Not sure how all that works.

To make @TomásEstefan's reply a little more easy to understand ... the HD feeds are digital, and have no relation as to whether or not the analog main signal is mono or stereo. That mode is incorporated into the digital signal's configuration.
