Does anyone know why WBT-FM is on a delay from the AM side? It's more than just a second or two. Also, during Panthers games, I believe the delay is still there. Is there a technical reason for this? Why can't they do a true simulcast?
The process of turning audio into digital broadcasting takes some time. Even if you are listening to analog FM when you hear the delay, I think they delay the analog to match the digital so that when receivers in cars or in marginal signal areas switch back and forth between digital and analog, the program remains in sync.
It could also be as simple as the encoding on their STL Chances are they are using a T1. Since the FM is merely a simulcast, they may have it set to a non-real time encoding.
WTOP in DC in a number of its simulcast incarnations would monitor in real time their primary signal and the simulcast signals were all delayed a second or two due to the STLs.
