WBTO AM1600

I used to work at the local daily newspaper in Linton years ago, it was called the Daily Citizen at the time, and remember 1600 being on the air. It was purchased by The Original Company and not sure what happened to it after that. They have an FM blasting through town now, and I do not believe it is simulcasting.

Tried to call the Original Company, got no answer and all the mailboxes were full???

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has info on this area.

Did Linton use to have a am station at 1600 on the dial. I think the calls were WBTO. How long as this been dark?
Been dark for a while.

The station was put on the air by the same people who owned WBNL in Booneville, IN. Being frugal broadcasters, the WBNL folks outfitted WBTO with used equipment that had seen it's better days in Booneville. The joke was that the call letters WBTO stood for What Booneville Through Out.

It would be Threw. If you are using the past tense of throw.

When was this?

And I responded:
My guess it would have been late 50's/early 60's but I don't have the info close at hand. When I find out a specific date, I'll let ya know.
And, RDO, in reviewing your 211 posts to Radio-Info, you made 37 grammatical errors and 16 spelling errors. But, what's a few of those among friends, right?

You know, if someone corrected me, I wouldn't freak out.

It's just that the meaning of the phrase changes when you use the other word.

You must a lot of time on your hands to re-read all my posts.

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but why would someone let a station go dark? Im sure the station owners must have some business reason behind this? Can anyone fill me in as to what this might be?

Not sure why they let it go dark. I've emailed the Origional Company some time ago and got nothing back from them. If someone wanted to fire it up agian, could they? Would it even have a chance to be profitable?

Mr. Pritchett responded with kindness and concern:

Freak out? You give yourself way too much credit.

Mr. Pritchett respectfully responded:

Thank you for your awesome grasp of the obvious. So I made an error. To you and everyone else on this list I would like to offer my most sincere and heartfelt apology. It's really not my fault, you see, I'm a product of public education. However, RDO, I did gave you an opportunity to show off your intelligence. I'm glad I could give you the chance to showcase your abilities and intellect. You can thank me later.

Mr. Pritchett responds:
It was a joke. I thought you might find it funny. Perhaps you are taking all this a little too seriously? Lighten up. Maybe you should try the decaf, my friend.

Isn't WBTO in a STUCCO building.. maybe it is green stucco?

I think I looked at it about 25 years ago, when I was looking to buy a station. I don't remember why I passed on it. For some reason, I remember not liking the town.

Never found the station. Actually never went looking for it. Used to travel down 41 to visit relatives in Gibson county, and listened to WBTO 1600 and the Sullivan stations. Small market radio is a genuine art form.

I emailed Mark Lange at The Original Company a year or so ago and got no answer.
I knew him way back in the early 70's in Valparaiso, he then went to WBOW, and I think he formed the Original Company and "collected" several stations.
It probably is dark because it was the weakest $ performer in the stable. I don't know, just guessing.

Last I knew, WBTO (AM) was running ABC Real Country as part of the WWBL/WQTY/WBTO (AM) "Superstation" combination. To the best of my knowlege, when WQTY went Oldies after Christmas in 2005, WBTO (AM) went dark.

I think the rules on stations going dark is that the licensee has 3 years to return the station to the air. If he does not, the license can be reassigned.

According to the FCC, WBTO AM1600 is a 500w daytime/32w nightime station.
The station had a renewal granted 07/26/2004, expiring 08/01/2012.

47 CFR 73.1750
The license of any station that fails to transmit broadcast signals for any consecutive 12 month period expires as a matter of law at the end of that period, notwithstanding any provision, term, or condition of the license to the contrary.

Technically they could run silent for 12 months less a day ... run legally for a day or two ... then be silent for another almost year before repeating the trick. (Technically, although running silent more than 10 days requires FCC notification and running silent more than 30 days requires filing for an STA). Upon renewal there is a question of if the station has been silent for more than 12 consecutive months.

More information and lists available http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/status/silent.html WBTO is not on the FCC's list of silent stations.

If they would let current WBNL Boonville owner Ralph Turpen run it, it would make a profit.. Since he took over the 250 watt AM in Boonville, he has 2 fulltime, one half time and a bunch of local folks filling a few hours a week, and this mom and paw throwback is billing 15 to 25 K a month, doing small town radio... One of the most listened to streams of radio on the net in Indiana... Facinating... :)

WBTO AM 1600 :D signed on the air sometime in 1953 by the Linton Broacasting Company. The Original Company Purchased WBTO along with it's sister WQTY FM. I'm from the Linton area but live in Connersville Indiana. I have fond memories of listening to WBTO as a child. WBTO needs to return to the air. The Langs made a big mistake killing AM 1600

WBTO and TOC were evicted from the studios. Quite a mess. Facilities were dangerous. No money to put in to relocating tower or studios. BTO is dark and will probably remain that way.
