WBUD will become all sports on March 31, according to All Access.
Kevin Williams new afternoon drive sports show just started up on WOBM AM and WADB. 3 of Millenniums AMs will be all sports. Will WOBM AM soon follow?

While for BUSINESS reasons, I can understand what's happening, I for one am SADDENED that yet another legendary radio station becomes something else yet again. They've done so many flips and flops with that station for SO many years, it's amazing that anyone was still listening. It's got a decent signal in most of Mercer and northern Burlington...another case of not being "ABLE" to see the "DEMO"..a/k/a
OLD. So..let's do FOX Sports because WPEN just switched to ESPN and 1040 is now ESPN simulcast. Are their that many people who need all those sports outlets? I don't have the research..so perhaps this IS the right way to go. So now, what do 55+ people do to hear music that pleases them? Satellite IF they even know what it is..and it's NOT repeaters of terrestrial radio as many still think. Or they gotta play Barry Manilow CD's in the car. Or IPODs IF they know how to do that. OR just throw in the towel and just listen to talk.
But my issue is how AM radio has been treated by MOST owners over the years.
I remember when I first came to the Mercer County area radio stations in '76. WHWH was SO huge in Mercer...it WAS Mercer radio then. Then Herb Hobler and the other decision-makers decided to do SOMETHING with their FM other than elevator music.
So ADULT ROCK was the buzz word.. and in the beginning, they mixed Tony Bennett with whatever was soft rock-type music in '75.. Ew..Then finally Tom Taylor and a lovely man name Phil Geiger were able to get them to let them make a real adult rock station..meaning FM pop music..HITS and some album stuff. WOW. I started there part-time..and was in AWE of the AM station across the hall....because SO much attention was given to the AM. I was then hired full time after moving to Lynchburg, Virginia for a few minutes. I came back and went full time. There was a lot of looking down their noses by the AM staff. While they LIKED us, they really thought THEY were the cat's meow. Suddenly within a very short amount of time, WPST started making real noise in the market..and overtook WHWH in billing. That was a HUGE task..and a BIG moment in local NJ radio. WBUD was still in the mix..and WTTM was still playing music for a while. PST just blew ALL of them away..and then KIX came on with the Lit boys.. They certainly gave PST a run for its money for a while..then Kix faultered. When PRESS took over 101.5, it took us about 4 months to figure out that SOMETHING else had to be done. The rest is history.
The point is..AM radio is all but over in most markets.. I guess there may not be any other thing for operators to DO with a 5000 watt station like WBUD. The only other alternative would be to make it Spanish or Religious. As it's program director for a short time in '89-'91 or so..I'm saddened that the tunes go away from that 1260 frequency. So long BUDDY. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the AM's at Millennium or however you spell it go that way.. However...in MY mind..OBM-AM still has a very loyal audience that likes the mix of music and talk. Messing with that MAY be a mistake just yet. But if it was up to ME.. I'd put reverb on it..and SMOKE it with 50's and 60's for those that can't get ANY other station that plays it. Get rid of the Manilow and say hello to Ricky Nelson..and The Beatles..and the 4 Seasons...etc..
I don't have the research to back that up..but with SO many people in Monmouth..and especially OCEAN...I don't think that's as left field as you might think. The OLD...OLDDDDD people will put up with it, because the SINATRA crowd is never gonna be served again..unless they go to Satellite..and it's just a matter of time before THAT goes away as the 70+ audience for Standards...um...croaks.
"It's evolution..well..you know", said Lennon.
BE BIG
www.reelradio.com WNBC's Time Machine..new hour posted now. It's fun.

And I think of some small, low power AMs that are doing well.WGHT in North Jersey
WBCB in Levitown PA. WMTR,not a low power operation also doing well. If only some crative were applied,Ah,why am I wasting my time? Creativity went out the window a long time ago.

I think based on the fact there is a casino community in AC's backyard, more than one sports station must suffice for one reason or another. Look at Las Vegas. They've got four sports stations - four - and one of them is running ESPN Deportes!

That makes sense with the sports betting. A gambler could listen and get whatever info he might need to make bets. Maybe they could have a show to talk about which celebrities are appearing at what casino and even throw in gambling tips and strategies,if thats legal.

Yeah, just what we need, a show that glorifies heckling Jon Lovitz at the Borgata - uhhh, wait...

I changed the call letters from WBUD to WKXW-AM in early 1980. Funny thing, that by mid 1980 I pulled a 6.4 12+, 6a-12mid, on 1260/WKXW Trenton as a simulcast to Kickx 101½ WKXW-FM, which I understand was, up until that time, and as I understand it, still remain the highest ratings ever achieved on that frequency. And that was with WABC and WNBC still rockin. I used to get a kick, out of listening to Kickx on AM. And I really don’t think it has anything to do with leaving the station on high power at night, but you never know. I felt then, that there was, and still even now to a certain degree, feel that there is something rather magical about the AM band. But I is really just an old DX diehard at heart. And you know how that goes. So I agree with BigJay. Now let’s play another jingle.

1490-WBCB has a loyal audience in my opinion because of a few things. . .
1.---local ownership
2.---hands on learning experience
3.---loyal sales staff who can sell local remotes
4.---local sports, mixed in with Phillies baseball and Eagles football
5.---local sports again. . .if you listen or look at their web-page you will see at least 35-40% of the high school games they broadcast are from Mercer County or Burlington County

When 920-AM was ESPN NO local sports coverage...WBUD had a chance as well, and they didn't jump on the ball.
Beleive it or not there is a HUGE audience for local sports in Mercer County, and you're almost garunteed a state champion from Mercer County for each sports season. and now they are buying time on 1350-WHWH Princeton to broadcast some of the northern Mercer County games.
by the way i still hear stories from the 70's when WBCB and WTTM would fight for room in the press box at PEnnsbury or Neshaminy high school.

not bad for a lil' 1,000 watt pea-shooter on a graveyard frequency who is still kicking after 50 years.

Dave Collins
WBCB sports director 1999-2006

Is WBCB brokered? I hear all kinds of strange shows at strange times on that station whenever I tune in. I know I've heard big band on that station in the middle of the day within the past year or two.

Confirmed in NERW today

WBUD will segue from "Unforgettable Favorites" to Fox Sports Radio with Jim Rome late morning/midday.

AM 1260 already has local sports -- Trenton Thunder baseball (they're the Yankees' Class AA farm team) and Rider University men's basketball. The format flip will be timed perfectly as the Thunder begin their season later in the week.

Sad to see WBUD to stop the music but I haven't listened to it since Dennis Maloy and Big Joe were voice tracked. WNPV 1440 info radio in Lansdale PA does well in it's market. Oops this is the Jersey board.

When I was a kid, virtually every store or office I went into in Trenton, Hamilton, or Ewing was playing WBUD. Even years later around 1997 I turned people onto that station. (That was back when they were still live and playing "Great Gold")

It was a really cool station that featured real oldies (on the lighter side) that appealed even to an older audience. They had the best of both worlds at that time which explains their overwhelming success just a few short years ago.

Not knowing much about Jersey radio now, I had heard that WBUD was owned by the same owners as WPST and in the late 90's when they went "Great Gold," they blew away WPST (or maybe it was 101.5) in the ratings becoming the most listened to station in Trenton. The suits supposedly decided that they couldn't have a little AM fleabite blow away their major FM station so they actually dumb-downed WBUD's playlist to turn off a lot of listeners.

As far as ratings go, I think they had at least an 8.0 around that time but, admittedly all of this is second-hand info on my part.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

97-5/94-5 WPST. . .Nassau Broadcasting
1260-WBUD. . .Press Broadcasting, now Millenium Broadcasting.

I've heard that legend as well. That at one point, possibly late 80's early 90's WBUD was king. The demise started in the early 90's with the popularity of N.J. 101.5.

ok it's after midnight and unforgetable favorites are still on! plus they just said your new home for unforgetable favorites! hmmm! an april fools joke may be? or will fox sports go on at 6 a.m.?

10:00 AM Tuesay and still playing the syrup-like 70's tunes we can't get enough of when we're in Jersey. Sing it Barry Manilow! Let's hear all about Mandy or the songs that make the whole world sing! Rock on! But I'll take it any day over another watered-down syndicated mind-melting sports talk format.

Since it's April Fool's Day maybe this whole sports thing is a stunt-like precursor to the return of live DJ's and the "Great Gold" format! Now that would be something to celebrate. Hmmm. Put the ratings through the roof and put the station back on the map. What a concept. But that would make too much sense I guess.

Better yet, keep the syrup and just add the great gold tunes to the existing playlist. That changes the playlist from maybe 150 songs at best to 400-500? Thoughts?

ok i got sick of waiting and wondering so i called the station the receptionist there told me the change will be april 14!
