After 25 plus years as a MOR/OLDIES/Nostalgia Big Band station,WBUD pulled the plug on its struggling automated format and went satellite today around 10am.

The format is called Unforgettable Favorites from ABC Radio networks and the format is closer to Sunny than the old BUD,Officially the format is 70s and 80s AC with a touch of BUD's oldies mixed in.

Out after 25 years are Frank Sinatra(although Jack Pinto will continue with the Sinatra show on Sundays),Tony Bennett,Nat King Cole,Perry Como,Dean Martin,Steve and Edie,Al Alberts and the 4 Aces,and the other crooners.

In are artists such as Phil Collins and Genesis,Harry Chapin,Don Mclean,Donna Summer,Gloria Gaynor,Fleetwood Mac,Rod Stewart,George Benson,Patti Austin, to name a few as well as more of Neil Diamond,Anne Murray etc.

Also out after 15 years is the AP RADIO NEWS replaced by ABC direction news at the top of the hour most hours of the day and Millenium Radio News during the rush hour.Plus the weather with Alan Kasper airs at 10 and 40 past each hour now.

The format itself isnt bad they play a lot of rare songs today in addition to familiar hits of the 70s etc.

Its sad to see a long running format go but obviously bud wants to save money by just going satellite and also wants a younger audience listening.Big bands and crooners are not desirable these days.

No, not really. It's a softer sound. The Breeze on 107.1 (and its simulcasts farther south) used to run the format. They still might overnights. And I'm sure WBUD will run it seven days a week.

I guess you are still lucky to have WBUD on the air. The people in the Philadelphia market have been thirsting for this type format since the demise of Standards on WPEN, be it on AM or FM. I am a Hard Rock/Metal fan, but once in awile its refreshing to hear this type music, I always loved to hear WBUD when I was in the area, I guess its still better than nothing what they have evolved into. WMID is still my favorite for Oldies/Nostalgia, does WMID come in at all in the Trenton area.
 
The way they phased in the new Unforgettable Favorites format the past few weeks along with the old format was interesting. There are probably a lot of the old regular listeners who may not even realize they've changed formats and may stay on. If you said 'the all new WBUD' they'd probably tune out. In the past few years the station couldn't decide what they wanted to be. They were soft gold AC/standards, then all oldies when WNJO went away, then back to soft gold AC/standards again, phasing out live jocks for voicetracked, then none.
Whatever audience held on for all that may stay on again.

According to Pirate Jim's site the station returned to the WBUD calls on September 1, 1981. It had been WTRT and WKXW (simulcast with 'Kicks 101 and a Half') for several years. I have an aircheck of Hy Lit giving the calls as WKXW and WKXW-FM from the 4th of July 1980. So this WBUD MOR hybrid format did last about 25 years, about as long as the WPEN standards format.

OK so whom do we talk to to buy WBUD???
any investors interested? I think the Radio T.E.D. format may do well there.

WBUD problems/Jack Pinto

Another problem has developed with WBUD.Many times during the course of a day the satellite feed goes down and there is at least 10-15 minutes of dead air before it comes on again for about 15 minutes or so then more dead air for 10 minutes.

BUD must have technical problems with the satellite.

Also it appears the 5am news hour also isnt on either replaced by dead air.

I hope they fix this problem soon.

Also I have a feeling Jack Pinto's Breakfast with Frank show has survived the format change and will air this Sunday 9 am till noon.

Why i say his show will continue?Reason being,his show still aired on Sundays after the jocks were dropped in Mid dec,plus he frequently referred the station as Unforgettable Favorites during last Sundays show and also said he is here each and every Sunday morning.Although hes voice tracked.

He must have a deal with Millenium to continue the show.

So its obvious his show survived the change to AC.

It would be nice if his show aired live and he actually was at the mike live every sunday.

Plus I also wish vhe would expand the show to include the crooners and big band music that was dropped earlier this week to at least keep the MOR format alive on Sunday mornings.

It would obviously be a new title heres a catchy name for it.

Unforgettable Favorites Sunday Brunch with Jack Pinto(featuring the greatest music of all time-the big bands/Sinatra/Bennett/Nat King Cole/Perry Como/Dean Martin/Harry Connick Jr/Ella Fitzgerald/The Four Aces and many more of your all time Unforgettable Favorites).

It would be a wonderful way to continue a long running format in a sunday morning show and a legendary radio host in their employ(part time)and let him decide when its time to hang it up.

I wouldnt be surprised if he has been dropped but lets hope he will be on this sunday.

Sorry to see the format change, and the live jocks gone. I started my career 21 years ago at the mighty WBUD in the newsroom with Cheryl Ann Jones and Ted Mansky. I'm now in Ohio, but still keep in touch with some of the guys at NJ101.5/WBUD.
