WBUR cuts 29, cancels Only A Game

I wonder why they’re cancelling it.

Donations must be down sharply, and a sports show in a time when sports are either not happening or happening in shrunken form without spectators would be the most logical one to eliminate. Ditching "Live From Here" makes sense, too. Its predecessor had a huge fan base and, even after the accusations against Garrison Keillor, I believe it still would have attracted more listener donations than "Live From Here," a music show with none of the quirky elements that made PHC such a unique radio program. But no show, especially on public radio or TV, can survive such allegations in the Me Too era.

As I've read people's reactions to "Live From Here" being cancelled the last couple of days, the responses have fallen into three broad categories:

1) I loved "APHC", but "Live From Here" didn't work for me.

2) I hated "APHC", and never really listened to "Live From Here" once Chris Thile took over.

3) I hated "APHC", and still didn't like "Live From Here".

I haven't seen much, if anything, from the expected group of "Live From Here" superfans. I personally am in group (3).

I'm still wondering how local stations are going to replace Live From Here. It's not like they can just run two more hours of unhosted back to back hits off the computer.

Reruns of "Weekend Edition"? Or maybe Classical24 or Beethoven Network musical filler for those local stations that also have classical sister stations or HD streams? You'd think SOMEONE at a higher level than the local caretakers would have guidance for the stations that suddenly will have nothing to air on that evening, right?

Pointless to wring hands and assume the worst here, IMO. It doesn't look to me to be a hopeless situation.

Firmly in camp (1).
Always felt like Keillor got a bit of a raw deal, having his show cancelled along with MPR essentially deleting all existence of him. All based on allegations from one person.

Definitely in Camp 3. Hopefully my local station (WCPN/Cleveland) replaces it with a few other one hour shows (I’d love a Ted Radio Hour and Freakonomics rerun). I’m sad about Only A Game being axed, I listen on my way home from work on Saturday mornings.
