WBXR-Am 1140 Hazel Green, AL

I'm curious about this station...

Who were the previous owners of this station before The Wilkins Communications Network? What were some previous formats? Where were their studios located?

I see WBXR has it's studios located in Fayetteville, TN.. and I would've thought they'd be in Huntsville or Decatur, a bigger city.

Not sure of ownership or studio location (check recnet for that). I know as WIXC it was country then oldies "The Big Bopper" and then what it is now. It has about the best signal in the Huntsville market. It was known as WIX-C in dixie when it was country.

Does anyone have any airchecks of the station?

And with regards to your assesment "it has about the best signal in the Huntsville market".. I wouldnt think that necessarily to be the case because its not right IN the market.

They do have a good signal but I think the best AM signal in Huntsville goes to 1550 WLOR. Unless you look at night coverage, then WBXR has them beat.

BXR comes in 10 times better than LOR here in Cullman. When LOR moved to a new daytime tower location it killed the signal here. Anyone know if LOR is still 50KW days?

It's *SUPPOSED* to be 50KW Day and peanut power at night... who knows what it's actually running.

I do believe they are operating at full power which is 50k. Oh and you are right, WBXR is daytime only. I was looking at the wrong thing. I can't speak for Cullman coverage but WLOR is BEAMING in Huntsville and does sound stronger in my opinion than WBXR.

I'd bet it is, too. It used to boom into Birmingham during the evening and was very listenable down in the far south suburbs. I'm in Mississippi now but often hear it around sunset, about 190 miles from H'ville.

The FCC's call sign changes thingy (sorry to be so technical) says the calls were WKZF in 1984, before becoming WIXC.

I remember hearing this station way back in the 80's. Most of the time it was WIX-C, but I had forgotten about the fact it was WKZF, too at one time (was that when it was the "Big Bopper"?). Wasn't sure if that was one and the same station (WKZF and the "Big Bopper").

I can hear WLOR quite a bit here, too, south of Birmingham. Sometimes during the day, but almost always close to sunset. I heard it not too long ago when I picked up my wife up at work. It was almost dark, and I listened to the station most of the way home.

I don't remember KZF at all. All I know is WIX-C, then the big bopper, and BXR. I also think it was a 50KW station when it was actually located in Fayetteville, Tn., and then downgraded to 15 KW when it moved to Hazel Green.

Someone mentioned that they didn't know where WBXR's studios were loacted at. The station itself is located about 3 miles north of the TN state line, my guess is the tower is somewhere around the state line.

I live in a small community called Battleground, in NW cullman co. I can hear 1140 a whole lot better than 1550. I have heard WLOR from a good distance, though. A couple years ago when their signal was decent in Cullman Co I heard them about sunset near Evergreen (about 250 miles south of HSV), and about daylight one morning on I65 near Montgomery.

The tower's about 4 miles west of Hazel Green somewhat near the oddly named Butter and Egg Road. Been down that way but never seen the towers, unfortunately.

I have seen them. Typical AM towers. They are in the middle of a field. You can see them to the north while driving down Charity Lane.

WIXC in Dixie was owned by a crazy man named Bill Malone.
Now that's a story.
Whatever happened to him?

He's on WYTM-FM in Fayetteville, Tennessee I believe. Still has the reverb box on last I heard...lol. Sounds exactly the same as when WIXC in Dixie was on the air.

just two unlit towers sticking up out of the trees between Bobo Section and Charity lane, 3 miles from my house. I've seen them there for many many years and only recently discovered what they were.

I worked for WBXR from Sept '92 to March of '94. At first it was oldies and then in Jan '93 it switched to southern gospel. The processing was a Texar Am audio prism. I love those things! The transmitter is a 25kw. The day power is 15k and critical hours are 7.5k. Click below to see the signal pattern.

WLOR is getting a partial refit and should be back up to 50k soon. It's been runnig between 10 and 27kw.
