WBYE Calera - anybody home?

Has anyone else noticed the dead carrier, running all night, at full daytime power?

I live in Calera here. WBYE with the dead carrier and using daytime power...that's "old hat". That's been going on for years now. :D

The dead carrier was at about 10:45PM local time, as I was flying up I-65.

Last time I heard WBYE during the day, they were playing "old school" R&B (about a year ago)

The R&B programming must be "few and far between" because I haven't heard anything on WBYE but black gospel (or Christian talk/preaching programming).

WBYE has been operating at night for years. They were allotted 23 watts for nighttime power, but to my knowledge, they never applied to use it. Under their FCC record, the 23 watts is labeled as "Plan". I am not sure if they are running the entire daytime power at night anymore. I do know when my wife and I moved to Calera about 9 years ago, I could usually hear WBYE during the nighttime hours with a good signal all the way to the Alabaster exit on I-65. That doesn't appear to be the case now (or at least not on a regular basis). The nighttime signal is barely audible past the Hwy 31 exit in Calera most of the time.

Got confirmation of night operation from someone in Maylene, that's about 10 miles NW of Calera so I doubt it's 23 watts they're using.

Does anyone know whether the owner's (Progressive United/Paschall C Mix) other station, WDLK in Dadeville, is still on the air? I have it listed as Classic Country. I hear they owned WACQ in Carrville at one point, too.

On Monday night, the dead carrier signal definately made it to the Alabaster exit.

Progressive must have some other businesses for which the radio stations are a write-off...

For a two week period, they were Classic Country, very professional with polished liners and everything. They then went back dark, and were probably on air just long enough to keep the license active.

I passed through Wednesday evening around 5PM and they were still on-air. Had a solid signal near the I-65/HWY 31 exit in Calera.

WBYE is still on the air, as of right now. I live in Calera. I can see their tower from my backyard, actually. ;)
