WBYN's days nearing an end?

Where should it target?

Interesting that it was presented as a "Reading" station in that post. Seems to imply that Reading is the main target even though the signal hits most of Allentown and parts of the Philly market.

So I propose this as a question to everyone: Is there an advantage to making this a "Reading" station instead of appealing to the whole area? Does that make it better able to unseat Y102? If you were programming this, would you focus exclusively on Reading or try to get Allentown and Philly listeners as well?

Let's not get excited. 90 minutes after they flip it, we'll be struck with a conclusion that sounds something like "You gotta be kiddin right? More of the same. BORING."

Philly doesn't need another FM.
Reading and Allentown do.
However: Do people from Reading and Allentown perceive themselves as from distinctly different areas? By trying to appeal to both, you may end up appealing to no one.
They'll probably get some Allentown listeners no matter what. Kind of like the way certain Philly stations show up between .4 and 1.3 in the Allentown book.

Re: Where should it target?

Since the signal covers a wide area, I would target all the folks who have moved from the sky high real estate in the Philly Burbs to the more "affordable" portions of Berks and Lehigh Counties. There's a lot of people who work in Philly but live in that area.

So Nassau sells it's properties in the Valley to put on a new station.....in Reading????? That doesn't make sense. Y-102 has had the market cornered with no serious competition in years....but from an advertising dollar standpoint, it would have made the most sense for this frequency to go along with 97.5 for a Philly strategy of some kind...Format? Good question..
Allentown and Reading folks do consider themselves to be from two different worlds.

So then, the million dollar question becomes...

If they ARE going to target both Reading AND Allentown....what to program?

The is the ONLY market where I would say a mainstream Top 40 WOULD WORK! Y102 is "Rock 40" and the best way to describe B104 would be a Hot AC.

Would they DARE go AC and try to punk out WLEV?

Based on Nassau's track record, you can pretty much rule out Oldies.

I don't think there's enough of an audience to support a Smooth Jazzer or Number whatever country station.

I don't think Variety Hits has proven itself to recommend a flip to that here. Besides, how well is Ben doing here?

Do you think they'd take the "Hawk" off of 99.9 and move it to 107.5 to keep that cash cow in the Nassau camp? I would ;)

Dance? FORGET IT!!! Rap/Hip Hop/Urban/RCHR/crap....not enough of an audience.

How about a FOCUSED rocker to try and punk out directionless ZZO?

Anyways, I have no inside info...these are just my rambl....errrrr....ideas!

I thought Nassau sold the LV group to some other group that owns stations in Atlantic City.

Not sure....1075alive.com lists the WYCL owners as "Legend Broadcasting". The new owners took over WBYO (at the time in August 89, moved the studio to Reading, then launched with an AC format October 12 of that year.

I believe in 1991 the company went into receivership and the license was put up for grabs by the brokerage where the station defaulted to. Hence, how WDAC wound up with it. <P ID="signature">______________
