WBZ-A/Boston Axes Flo Jonic For Telling Truth?

Re: WBZ-A/Boston Axes Flo Jonic For not following the directives of her superiors.

The press *IS* free. However, the person in charge of said press(es) is the owener of the press, the publisher or the licensee....not the reporters who simply work for the publisher or broadcaster....who has the ultimate authority.

No matter what the consequences? No matter who dies?

Maybe they are doing that now...maybe they simplky wanted the story held until they could do just that. Newspaper hold stories all the time.

Gee, I guess your bias shows.

Flo Jonic fired for NOT doing her JOB and/or not listening to her boss, plus...

Fired for telling the truth? Truth is, I don't know the answer but I can guess. I think she was let go because she did not agree with her boss or bosses and then mass e-mailing her co-workers dissing the bosses. Even if everything she alleged in the e-mail (I have not read it) is true to the best of her belief, it is not for her to put in writing to share with co-workers and others.

Regardless of the validity of her story. Regardless of "freedom of the press". When you work for other people you WORK by THEIR (legal) RULES. Very very simple. You keep breaking the rules and ticking off the bosses and you are likely to lose your job. If you publicly humiliate or otherwise tarnish the image of the company, management or their decisions and you might lose your job. Is that a surprise? Not to me. Plus, she has had disagreements before.

Now to the instant story at hand. Let's assume the FBI asked that this story be embargoed (held) for broadcast at a later date. That would give the FBI time to "fix" or plug the security problems Jonic uncovered. If it is a matter of public safety to delay the story I could understand (and maybe her bosses felt that way). Tagging the story in September with the fact that the story was held until the FBI fixed things due to WBZ investigation might have been a plus for WBZ.

Now let's assume that the bosses thought it was such a good story they would hold it until ratings time. Could happen. But what if someone else scooped them with the story? That's a big risk (particularly with a disgruntled reporter). Doing the story now and a follow-up on the story on WBZ during ratings could also be an asset for BZ. The story uncovered by WBZ and what's been done since then. My opinion is that holding the story was not ratings related.

Now, let's assume that, talented as this reporter is, if SHE gathered the security flaw information other people can the same thing. Maybe even the terrorists. Just a guess on my part. Would the FBI think that only this one reporter could get the information? Could others gather the same information as Jonic? If "protecting" the simple fact that there ARE security flaws at Boston FBI building then that cat is already out of the box. We already know there are security flaws (which will hopefully get resolved quickly).

I think the thread subject is quite misleading. I do not think she was fired for telling the truth.

You are correct, of course but remember this is the internet where any idiot can post and conspiracy theories abound.

And you just posted what?

When you work news and radio, you work for a corporation. She was let go because she could no longer work in an environment where news is censored and blocked to protect powerful corporations and governments.

Big tobacco for years did block news outlets from reporting that cigs are addictive. That is a fact and we all know it is true. You remember that.

Gary Webb's blockbuster "Dark Alliance" story was published and found to be true then retracted by his own paper and he was let go. His story "Dark Alliance" has not been proven wrong to this day. It has stood up, yet he couldn't find work at any major newspapers.

Al Giordano posts on the internet but you won't find much theory in his writing. Guy used to write for media in Boston but like most who burn to expose truth got fed up and started a school of authentic journalism and this hugely famous site http://narconews.com

Just because she had a nutty and did not act the way the rest of you corporate clones would, doesn't mean the story was blocked for a valid reason. Two different issues, the firing and the blocking of the story. Separate the two. She got fired for reacting to the blocking. But why the story was blocked is up for debate. FBI and Homeland Security are not protecting us. They didn't before 9/11 and they don't now. That is the story. If you are news person, you are expected to report that, and fight to get it out. Even if you have to get fired to do so. That's what Flo, Gary, and Al have all done. Been passionate about bringing out the truth. Nice piece in this week's Boston Herald about how so much of the Homeland Security spending budget goes to pork to plant flowers and to buy icecreams for politicians.
