WBZ-AM Dethroned?

L

In case you hadn't noticed, the Arbitrends for Boston just appeared (don't worry moderator, I won't quote numbers) and WBZ-AM has been dethroned BY TWO outlets! JMN is number one, and WEEI-AM is number 2 (just like the Red Flops, in more ways than one)! WBZ then appears in an unaccustomed position TROI (a little French lingo). And look...WKLB is right up there with the big boys while still beaming from W. Andover.

This must be like the first time in a decade that the station was not #1, and who knows how long since it was not in the top 2!

I believe both WEEI and WJMN have been number 1 in the past year or so, possibly just in the trends, not that whole book. This is not the first time, I know that for sure. WEEI was number 1 right after the world series win.

WBZ the all repeat station. They need to add a little life during the day. Their demo is starting to (die off) change and with other talk stations (96.9, 680, 590 etc...) giving news with topical talk shows, maybe they're in trouble. Maybe not. We shall see.

we all know that WBZ gets solid numbers from their "Traffic On The 3s". The news/traffic station is usually on people's preset - but who can listen to a steady diet of it? Great station to get you through the expressway and for some news when commercials on other stations get to be oppressive.

Regarding ratings:

With all due respect, individual Arbitrends are UNWEIGHTED and sometimes show the damndest things until they are combined with all total survey period information and intelligence and the final figure is published.

Oops, did I say "intelligence" and "ratings" in the same paragraph?!?

I don't think you're supposed to post relative position numbers either, as well as ratings numbers.

I thought 590 (WEZE) was a religious format of sermons and contemporary Christian music. How does that factor in with talk stations? Or, are you thinking of the original all-news WEEI 590 AM of many years ago?

First of all, they are general cumes and are worthless. The only purpose they serve is that the number 1 can say "we're number 1." From what you've quoted, WBZ is still doing well in their key demographic. I did not see WRKO, or WTKK up there. Of course, I'm extrapolating, I would need the whole story. WEEI might be a concern, but I don't think the same people who listen to all news are listening to all sports talk.

Second, the subject "WBZ-AM Dethroned?" hardley tells the whole story, when you consider that they came in number 3. For a market like Boston, that is still good. Also, these are not year ending measures, and one book does not a success make or break. So I think we need to wait a for another ratings period before we can jump to any conclusions.

Finally, lets be careful talking about this ratings stuff, Arby's doesn't like it, and when they call Radio-Info, we'll like it even less...
