WBZ, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy

Yesterday, during Jeopardy, a ticker appeared on screen alerting viewers that Friday episodes of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy will air at 2:07 AM and 2:37 AM on Saturday mornings, "until further notice":

The reason for this is to broadcast a show called "Patriots All-Access" during the 7 PM hour on Fridays. My gripe is, why do these popular game shows have to air at a time of day when most folks are fast asleep? There's currently a 22-game champion going for win #23 on Jeopardy, and in this top-10 market, it'll probably be missed by many! Can't Patriots All-Access air on WSBK instead? WSBK is airing Patriots-related programming during the 8 PM hour on Fridays - they could just make it a 2-hour block on that channel! Apparently reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" are more important to this station, when every episode of that show can be streamed on HBO Max!

Where can I go to file a formal complaint about having to wake up at 2:30 AM to watch the newest episode of Jeopardy? Unlike prime time network shows, Jeopardy is syndicated and isn't available to stream the next day. You don't see other top 10 markets regularly delaying Wheel and Jeopardy.

Why stay up? Most people have TVs with built-in capacity for recording and time-shifting programs, or at least have some sort of recording device hooked up to their vintage, plain vanilla OTA receivers. Are you a technophobe? Go ahead and complain, but nothing will come of it.

I'm not a technophobe - in fact, I do have a DVR, but I don't want to have to wait until the next day to watch Matt Amodio attempt a 23rd win when the rest of the East Coast can still watch it in the 7 PM hour.

It also means having to stay off social media for a significant period of time, because the Jeopardy social media accounts will typically post results of a game right at 11 PM Eastern, since by then the show typically has aired in all television markets.

Sorry, can't work up much sympathy. You do realize that what you want so much to watch was recorded months ago and it matters not a whit when you get to watch it? Let the Patriots fans get their fix of team news tonight and watch your show when it's convenient for you. I'm sure WBZ gets more advertising revenue from the Pats show than it does from Jeopardy -- wouldn't be surprised if the Pats themselves pay WBZ handsomely for the show to air when it does and not be shifted to early morning.

Wheel and Jeopardy are often loss leaders for stations; they bring in good ratings, but the local stations have to pay quite a bit for them and only get a limited amount of local commercial time to sell. It’s the reason that WHDH dropped the two shows years ago. And the demographics have gotten older since then. WBZ is contractually obligated to run the Friday night Patriots show on one of its stations, as part of its relationship with that organization. My guess is that WBZ/WSBK makes more money with Big Bang than with Jeopardy and Wheel.

I have Comcast in Bristol County and receive WPRI Channel 12 in Providence which also airs Wheel and Jeopardy at 7 and 7:30PM. They can be seen on Fridays during football season. If you don't have WPRI on cable try an over the air antenna to receive it. Other locations in MA might have WPRI on Comcast.

My parents have Xfinity and live in Bristol County. I was able to DVR Jeopardy off of WPRI on Friday. However....

WPRI started Jeopardy early! Johnny Gilbert's introduction didn't get recorded because the clock read 7:29 PM, and the program guide thought that channel was still airing "Wheel of Fortune".

Why does WPRI start Jeopardy early?

Some stations do that to get a little extra commercial time either during a show like Jeopardy or in the break before prime time. Or... they might be carving out a little time for a news update/promo before prime time.

It happens during prime time, too. Networks let one program run a minute longer--to allow for more commercials in THAT show and take the time out of a less-popular show.

WBZ ran a ticker during yesterday's broadcast of Jeopardy, alerting viewers that Friday episodes of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy will move to WSBK during the NFL season. This is a welcome change from previous years, when the game shows would be pushed to the 2 AM hour on Saturday mornings.

I wonder if the upcoming Second Chance Tournament, Tournament of Champions, and WSBK becoming an independent station again have anything to do with this decision?
