Ok, I know Steel City Media's engineer hangs out here.

Lite Rock 92.9 changed calls from WLTJ to WBZB-FM.

What's the deal? Or is it still hush-hush?

Just to play around a bit: WBZB sounds awfully close to WBZZ...

What does it mean? A new format!

BZB sounds a lot like the old B94 WBZZ.

Actually, it seems reading the minds of the folks at Steel City Media may be the best new hobby out there.

First they give up the classic rock genre at WRRK-FM 96.9 (or whatever callsign that station is about to have), first to a watered-down "rock without rules" then to a BOB-FM format which sounds a lot like "throw it against the wall, see if it sticks, then play it."

Now, a station that had a pretty good format is conceding defeat to WSHH-FM 99.7, even though the latter goes satellite overnight with Delilah and John Tesh. First it goes all-Christmas, then it changes to a callsign that sounds more appropriate for WRRK. (WBZB ... WBOB ... Hmmm?)

Merely a strange thought ... is a flip of formats (and staffs) in the offing come the day after Christmas ... Bob to WBZB and Lite Rock to 96.9?

But, as I said, I'm only trying to read minds. Make of it what you wish.
 
I don't think it would make any sense to flip Bob to 92.9 after all of their advertising on 96.9?

I agree. Again, however, what sense did it make to grab a call sign for 9.29 that ... all things considered ... still would be a better fit at 96.9?

I was just thinking how ruthless Steel City Media is if WBZB would be like a B93. First they go Bob first and take Jack away from Infinity, then, if K-Rock flops after Howard Stern leaves, Infinity wouldn't be able to bring back WBZZ!

Anyway, I would love to see an alternative to KISS. I like DJs on KISS (I KNOW people disagree, but it's my OPINION!) but I can't stand how they repeat the same songs over and over again. The "old" songs they play, yeah, they repeat those too!

I just went on Radio-Locator.com and found that WLTJ's website has been blown to bits....and the format is now "Holiday." And the calls are officially WBZB.
Is someone crying "wolf" again?

Clueless, maybe. Ruthless, not so much.

And I seem to recall posting the day B flipped to K-Rock that I would have been B93 within 24 hours if I were them. Better late than never, I guess.

Then again, they did a month-long stunt for essentially nothing last December on 97, in fact what they brought back was worse then what they started with.

And if they DON'T do something with 97's calls, they're going to get diary confusion between their own two stations. Ruthless (and by the way, whatever became of those "intriguing personalities" on 97?).

I also checked on that webpage and it also states that 3WS is "Holiday" too. Obviously that is just there for now, hence the holiday season is upon us! I don't know, this still has me confused. Any thoughts on what the call letter flip means? Will there be a format change?<P ID="signature">______________

I think 3WS will return to their original greatest hits format. As for WBZB, I would say B 93 is the best bet, but maybe not. It could be a tease. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I went on yesterday and saw the WBZB listed. I just went on again today, and it is back to WLTJ, with a link to their website.

They're probably still using their holiday music as a stunt to flip format.

A tease? For who? WLTJ listeners who would have went to the website to look for their station and accidentally found out about a format flip? Nahhh. Format flips generally aren't good news for listeners already on that frequency. They are there because they like it. Changing it is bad, thats why radio stations try to hype it up as a good thing, and try to sell it to new listeners giving up on the old.

No, my money is on accidental reveal on the website, as it would also explain why today (after someone with sharp eyes posted it on the radio board) the error is corrected.

The only people this potential format news would really tease are us, the insiders. I don't think they'd risk pissing off their present audience early just to tease us. Or to stunt.

Considering the shrewd moves Steel City has pulled in the past, like changing WRRK's format last year from one thing to the same thing with a different slogan, then changing the format but keeping the calls, I suspect they're changing the calls on WLTJ because they are KEEPING the format.

True, that doesn't make any sense. But that would be consistent with everything else they've done lately.

Just for fun...

This is not at all a prediction, but I was curious who, if anyone, had the AM calls and if the FM calls were in use previously. Interesting article at http://www.geocities.com/rduhistory/wtsb.html provides the history. The most recent format for WBZB AM in Raleigh (sold about 18 months ago with a subseqent call letter change) was "all local bands, all the time...". Interesting...

One would hope that Raleigh had more in the way of good local bands than Pittsburgh has at the moment. I don't know if anyone could handle a radio station that played wall-to-wall Clarks and Povertyneck Hillbillies.

Thanks a lot Realist! I was eating cereal when I read this and milk squirted out my nose. It was like 3rd grade all over again.

And not an unprecedented level of stupidity either...

In Tampa, 102.5 WHPT was known as the Point for a long time. Eventually Cox ended up buying it and after about 5 years as "The New 102-5" they eventually became "The Bone," never changing the calls.

Meanwhile they fliped 101.5 to all 80's and called it... you guessed it... The Point. (Calls are now WPOI).

So maybe Steel City's about to sell out to Cox...<P ID="signature">______________

This is going to be pretty interesting. I believe that 92.9 may be playing "holiday" music now, but they're probably tinkering with flipping formats like they did with their sister, the former 97 RRK. I have strong feelings that they (92.9) may switch afterwards. And yes, BZB does sound a lot like BZZ. They're trying to "unearth" the old B94 - Or maybe another format. If 92.9 does indeed flip, what will happen to their DISCO show on Saturday nights? Seeing that LITE ROCK 92.9 had been lagging behind WSHH all this time, I am guessing that come JANUARY 2006, I'm predicting a FORMAT CHANGE --- very soon. That's just my take on the situation.
