WBZB: Just the facts.

It is 100% clear that SCM has control of WBZB:
http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/callsign/prod/main.html

What's NOT clear is whether those calls are destined to 92.9 or 96.9.

Based on THIS link...
http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/.../call_hist.pl?Facility_id=73889&Callsign=WLTJ

...it seemed like they were headed to 92.9. But if you go there now, WBZB has been removed! (And this removal happened over the weekend! Interesting.)

And based on THIS link...
http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/.../call_hist.pl?Facility_id=72333&Callsign=WRRK

...they aren't headed to 96.9, either!

But they have to be going to one of the two, don't they? You can't squat calls anymore. SO, what do you guys think of this theory:
1) SCM picked up WBZB with the intention of using them as BOB calls on 96.9.
2) Someone @ the FCC messed up and assigned them to WLTJ.
3) We start to chat it up on-line.
4) It gets back to SCM.
5) The FCC removes it and decides to deal with it on Monday.

Could be incompetence alright, especially since someone from SCM or their lawyers had to submit the request!

There was a WBZB on 1090 near Raleigh, NC a few years ago. Maybe it still shows in the FCC's database, even though that station seems to have gone dark?

When we went looking for a classic rock call we found WXCR. FCC's call letter database said it was in use, but we couldn't any indication where. Finally figured it out that it was previouslassigned to a station north of Albany, NY, which had since moved on to a different format and call. Took the DC lawyer to walk it through.

I'll give you one MORE reason that WBZB will be 96.9's call letters and not 92.9's.: It kills two birds with one stone.

1) They are good calls for "Bob". We already know that.
2) It's a sound defensive move. The "Z" in BZB puts up a roadblock for anyone else who wants to ressurect/trade off of the heritage of B94. Any "BUZZ", "BZZ", "Bee", etc would face call letter confusion.

Thoughts?

PS: I hope they've thought of this and I'm not giving SCM some new ideas!

INTERESTING HYPOTHESIS. I like it.

However, what do most people in the Steel City associate with B-94? The letter "B"; some late 30s-early 40s types might think of the old insect mascot. But for the longest time, WBZZ was merely a legal ID. The marketing was 'B-94'. In that case, ANY STATION that has "B" in their calls could adopt the format; or any station without 'B" in their calls.

I have to agree with you. Nowadays, call letters are a formality, not the name people use to identify a station. If you talk to people who don't work in radio, most of them don't even know the calls for most of the stations that they listen to.

It's the same with rounding station frequencies to the nearest whole number. Back in the olden days of analog tuning dials with the line that moved along the tuner, calling 96.9 "Channel 97" or calling 93.7 "B-94" made some sort of sense. Today, the great unwashed are simply confused by stations identifying themselves with a different number from what is displayed on their radio's digital tuner.
