This is a good thread, I hope Steve reads this one, or hopefully Peter Casey. I
used to be a regular caller, but I have long since gave up on calling him. Not to toot my own horn, but I was one of his favorites. I have been a listener from the beginning in 1999, started calling in around 2002. I have noticed the show going steadily downhill, especially the past 2 years or so. Maybe anger management classes would be a good start...
We got along great, always had great calls, he never mistreated me, but it is how he treats many of the other callers that has turned me off. He is so stuck on himself that it is overbearing anymore. Nowadays, I tune in just to see if Morgan White Jr. is filling in - if not, I go to WGN for the rest of the night.
Steve used to have a good thing going, but he has lost it. If you are a regular listener of the show, have you noticed that many of the regular callers do not call in anymore? Not hard to figure out why. I personally cannot take any more of his rudeness, brash attitude. That, along with the direction that he has decided to take the show in. The heavy topics bring out the worst in him, for sure.
In the early days, he was very enjoyable, nothing like a 5 hr. show about Peanut Butter, or Collections, or your favorite season, etc. But now, political blah blah blah, boring night after boring night. His "one of a kind" unique show has taken on the same old faceless garbage that I can get anywhere on the dial these days. The only thing worse would be George Noory... :-\ ( I think)
Oh & have you caught onto his new thing that he does? Cute little trick, clever, but we're onto it, Steve... :
He will say something like... "You can call in on Presidential politics, or something on the lighter side, baseball, football, foliage, cats, your fav. comfort food..."
then, after "pretending" to allow callers to call with light topics, he will immediately follow that with "Congress voted on the bailout bill today, blah blah blah blah blah, mindless dribble, etc..." which will end up being a 10 minute "Steve only" monologue.
See what he just did? Did you catch that? He pretended to allow light topic calls, & then blabbered on for 10 minutes about the political hoo-hah. By inciting callers for 10 minutes non-stop, do you seriously think that you're going to get a "favorite comfort food" call?!?
The original poster has it quite correct;
Stevie boy you need to lighten up, it's only a radio show - I'm sorry "BROADCAST"
and while you are a talented host you ain't no Larry Glick or Jess Cain.
I would also add Norm to that list. Kinda funny; Steve mentions frequently that Norm is is mentor, that he patterns his show after him... guess Steve forgets what type of show Norm used to do.
In closing, I would like to say to Steve personally;
Guy, I really miss calling you; The rapport that you & I had was unparalleled. We had a lot of fun with the calls, always a light topic caller, I was. I do appreciate the time that you gave me, I never felt rushed, you gave me plenty of airtime. I would like to talk with you in a candid manner off the air, just to share feelings & find out why the change, as it definantly has not been for the better.
Bet you'd like to know who I am!
One small hint - I am from state to the South of you. You figure it out.
Sorry I got so long winded, & maybe a bit personal, but this has been a long time coming for me. I am very upset with the new direction of the show, as I mentioned earlier.
Maybe this thread will serve as "food for thought." I would sure like to hear Steve comment on it, preferably after the 3:00 hour. (another hint)
What used to be "UNIQUE" has now turned into "STATUS QUO"
Oh, and one more thing - Congrats on Max, I am very happy for you. (I am serious about that)
