WBZZ vs. WKST

Coming up shortly is the anniversary of the death of B94 (Whether you liked it or not.)

Now there is only one top 40 station left in the Burgh, WKST. Personally, I cannot stand KISS FM. Not only do I believe the station has no on air talent, but the station and its DJ's don't relate to Pittsburgh (They all seem to be outsiders trying to act like they are from Pittsburgh.) Despite my own opinion, KISS FM is very popular and was successful in defeating B94 which had (Some) talent and was rooted into Pittsburgh.

Now since I am an idiot, here is my question. If B94 was so popular for so many years, how did Kiss FM defeat them?

Your Friend in Radio,

-The Idiot

In my opinion WBZZ did not embrace hip-hop until it was too late. They rested on the fact that they had no competition and catered to what ended up being an older crowd who listened to WBZZ because it made them feel young. If you look at the top 10 you will notice that 8 or 9 cuts are hip-hop. So when WKST came out swinging with the music that the YOUTH of Pittsburgh could relate to, it marked the end of WBZZ. We older folks complain about the repetition but when a young school-girl hears 50 Cent or Ciara, she starts screaming "That's my jam!" They like to hear the same songs over and over. You might then ask...why didn't they listen to WAMO. Reception is poor in many parts of the city and there is a lot of R&B mixed in. These kids aren't mature enough for R&B.

INCREDIBLE!! People still talk about the station that most people claim they hated at the end and were glad it was gone. Very interesting comments and opinons about it as well. Always be a place in my heart for the B. Lot of great memories and times despite what people think went on there.

Hi "idiot," welcome to the board. I can't stand KISS FM either, but I've found myself listening lately. The charts have been changing lately and I've been noticing a shift away from nearly 100% hip-hop. So I've been tuning in to listen to some of the mix of hits they've been playing. I can't stand the DJs either and (as I've expressed on this board before) can't stand the speeding up of songs. Why must they do this? I think they should play less music at normal speed. It might be a decent station if they slowed things down a bit. Quality is more important than quantity. Oh well.. just my thoughts. Still miss B94 too.

The speeding up of songs is so irritating...the vocals on some songs sound almost like The Chipmunks. Honestly I can't see how stations can do this...it's the musicians art and they are changing it. It would be like a museum changing a famous painting to make it more hip or popular...rubbish.

The addition of music outside of hip-hop is great. I was shocked to see that they played Mr. Bightside by the Killers...excellent song.

It still will never be the same for me since B94 left. I know a lot of you say get over it, yada yada yada. Personally B has my vote anyday over Kiss. The B was a ture part of Pittsburgh and now it's gone. It's earned it's spot in the 'Burgh and now it's no more.

BRING BACK B94!<P ID="signature">______________

Great question and a really simple answer...B94 did what many others before them did in other markets...they rested on their laurels and did not react...did not get proactive to firm up their place in the market.

I am sure a PD and a Consultant and lord knows who else sat in a room listening to Kiss FM and said these guys will never last...we have been top 40 in the Burgh forever and no one is gonna get us...well Guess what...those are the stations that usually lose.

I think B94 just got comfortable and felt that the audience may wander away to sample something new, but that ultimately they will come back...well they didn't!

Kiss FM is NOT better...but it was fresh, new and different when B94 was old and broken down and rather than reinvent itself to freshen up and compete, they rolled over and died...VERY SAD!

Bring back B? I say bring back KQV and the "fun-lovin'five plus one". The B is for whippersnappers!

That is a great song. But it sounds ridiculous in rapid mode. Other pop songs such as "Lonely No More" by Rob Thomas sound equally as bad when played by 96.1 KISS.

Excellent assesment. WKST is probably the absolute worst of the CC KISS stations; Youngstown's and even Wheeling's KISS FMs both put "96-1 KISS" to shame.

In a couple years when the pendulum swings back and Top 40 is the format du jour again (like it was back in 1999/2000 and prior to that the late 80's, and so on) you'll see B94 rise from the ashes.

Glad to see TJ found time to talk about himself on this thread

Here We Go Again...

Here we go again, people are going to start on TJ again because he used to work at B94 or whatever. Give the guy a break. He was using the thing he knew the most about, himself, as a reference.

I don't think anyone else wants to hear all the petty remarks that may stem from this or any other posts that are created as the 1 year anniversary of B94's demise approaches. A lot of people liked the station, myself included. Just let people relive and reminisce about a great radio station for a few weeks and then guess what... it will be over!

Thanks for letting me vent and if the comment wasn't a slam on TJ (and it was just a friendly jab), forgive me. If this one wasn't, I'm sure one would come within the next month!

Thanks again for letting me rant and enjoy the summer!

TT
