WCAP PURGING PROMOS WITH CLARK SMIDT'S VOICE ON THEM

The Lowell Spinners played yesterday afternoon, so last night WCAP was strictly music ("The Beatles and Before"). I had it on for several hours and noticed that Clark Smidt's voice was largely absent. He had been on countless promos and commercials previously, and except for the music sweepers and one commercial for a law firm, he was gone. I think, but am not certain, that commercials that he had voiced might be being re-recorded by others. I guess you could say that this is the first of the changes predicted for the post-Smidt era there.

Jeez guys: I've worked for Clark before...he's hardly the evil monster some of you make him out to be. Difficult? Yes. So is Gordon Ramsay. That doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's doing. I can think of many people worse than Mr. Smidt in this business.

Difficult?

Gordon Ramsey is playing toward a TV audience in a supposed "reality" setting.

Mt Saint Clark can blow at any moment, and kiss you on the lips the next.

Depends on your definition of difficult, because you just gave a perfect example of how pompus two people with tempers can be.

Gordon Ramsay is a TV chef who yells at people, but it's staged (more or less).

Clark is rude, mysogynsitc, racist, and throws things at employees. But you keep fighting the good fight NHRadio. You're probably the only friend Clark has left!

Bird...have you personally witnessed him being racist or throwing things at employees, or is this hearsay? I admit he can be abrasive, but I've never seen (or even heard of) that kind of behavior from him. Have you worked for him?

I won't say which station NHRadio, but I have had to deal with him. He called a female on-air talent a "stupid cow" to her face. Made her cry and laughed about it. He made fun of different social groups when I dealt with him. He calls people immature names. He micromanages his staff and STILL doesn't know how to run a damn station. I'm just scratching the surface here. You sound like an apologist for him. How's that working for you?

Reply to NHRADIO...

Yes.

I have. I have seen the temper tantrums, kicking the walls, degrading employees, improper personal conversations with female employees.

Who even usees the terms "jig-a-boos" anymore.

ONCE investigated by the NH Human Rights Commission (well who hasn't I guess).

The man's a loose cannon and quite frankly does NOT know how to run a radio station.

I'm not apologizing for him at all...nor do I work for him. I'm truly saddened by the examples you and Jim gave. Obviously that's totally unacceptable behavior.
If I ever saw those things, my opinion would likely be much like yours. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

No matter what type of work setting, whether it be at a radio station, a school, a body shop.... whatever, that type of discriminatory conduct is totally unacceptable in any way, shape or form. It makes you wonder how many other people have been subjected to someone's conduct like that and have not reported it. NOBODY should be treated like THAT, ever. What goes around..........

Fat cow is acceptable? How about the guy who CORRECTLY stated someone was both fat and lesbian? He was run out of town before the lynch mob got to him.

Apparently "hostile work environment" applies.

Could have been that he said those words in a very derogatory way (DePetro); also he had used an anti-gay slur to describe Matt Amorello. He was already on this ice with that. Some sponsors like Pilgrim Health care were upset...also John DeP had low ratings.

I worked with Clark Smidt for a while at WHOB, and while I'm not going to dwell on the worst aspects of his personality, I will say that he has some very effective ideas as far as format and positioning statements.
WCAP was unlistenable during the last few years of the Cohen era, and now it's interesting. The positive you can blame on Clark as well.
Let'shope that doesn't change

Flip a Clark Coin...Heads or Whatever Which Way The Wind Is Blowing.

A thrill ride to be sure.

Apparently the purge is complete. The music sweepers have been replaced by voices other than Clark's, and doesn't appear to be on any of the spots they run.

Back in the late '70s, I worked at WEZE, and Clark was the PD and using the station to tweak the Soft Rock album format he was later to take to WEEI-FM. Clark was, shall we say, known for entertaining prospective employers on WEZE's nickel.

One midday, I was at the Japanese steakhouse across from the station in Park Square with Frank Iorio, the local sales manager. When the waiter came by, Frank asked "what's on the menu for $250.00 ?"

When the waiter looked back at him quizzically, Frank looked across the table at me and said..."I was just wondering what Clark Smidt had for lunch yesterday."

On the flip side, I always found Clark a pretty interesting and smark guy and easy to work with.

Regards,
TSB

Does anyone know if the rumor is true that Clark would not add "Short People" by Randy Newman to the WEEI-FM rotation because of his short stature?

As for Clark's work reputation, I can't respond to that but IMHO, WEEI-FM Soft Rock 103 was one of the best stations to ever grace the Boston airwaves.

Thanks for all the comments......fortunately not all that many are true and new to me. If anyone is offended, I apologize. Highest respect for folks in the business; not all are role models, however, as I'm sure we've all seen. Rumors and here say are part of the business. I have slammed a phone or two but don't throw things. Many years, folks and stations. Hope to be remembered for the folks helped, good things done and good sounding stations that serve and entertain.

I like Randy Newman but didn't like the Short People tune for Softrock WEEI-FM in '79. I do admit to being 5'8." Didn't play it and Variety wrote a front page story about it for nice call letter recognition. Many stories in the naked city.

Here's to local radio and making it work extremely well for audience, advertisers and the folks who do so much to make stations work well.

"To be continued......"

Best to all, Clark
