WCBK's Bob Stagg's passes

Former "Voice of the Artesians" Bob Staggs passed away suddenly Monday night. He was 67 years old. Bob covered Martinsville High School sports for WCBK for many years starting in the '70's. He left radio a few years back and had recently been caring for his wife Connie who had suffered a brain aneurism. During his last stint at the station, starting in the late '90's, he worked as part of the morning show. If you ever needed a break from the board, all you had to do was ask him about the high school basketball tournament. He could do 20 minutes on the evils of class basketball, and never take a breath. He was one of the greats.

Scott, so sorry to hear that. I didn't know Bob that well, but from what I understand, he was a great guy. My condolences to the family.

Robert W. “Bob” Staggs, 66, of Martinsville passed this life on Monday, December 22, 2008.

He was the son of Robert Clinton and Mary Ann (Gough) Staggs, born on March 17, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bob graduated from Martinsville High School with the class of 1960 and went on to study broadcasting for two years at Butler University.

On April 26, 1965 he married Connie Jean (Stierwalt) Staggs. She survives in Martinsville.

During the 1960’s he took his first broadcasting job in Union City with the local radio station. A short time later, he returned to Martinsville and began his 30+ year sports broadcasting and disc jockey career with WCBK. Throughout the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s, Bob was “the voice of Martinsville” to many. In addition to broadcasting many of the Artesian sporting events for the local radio station, Bob was the public announcer heard at hundreds of games, Morgan County Fair events and the Paragon Speedway. During his years in broadcasting and public announcing, he was also employed as a car salesman for Tim Wilson Chevrolet and Forever Ford in Martinsville and at Miles Home Furnishings, Sears and Staggs/Walgreens Drug Store, all in Martinsville. Currently, he was employed by the Martinsville High School Athletic Department.

He was a member of the River Valley Christian Church in Martinsville and the Elks Lodge #1349 where he served as Exalted Ruler from 1973-74. He was also instrumental in coordinating the annual “Hoop Shoot” benefit. He was a former member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville and had been a little league coach for many years.

Bob was an avid Martinsville Artesian fan and Indianapolis 500 enthusiast. In addition to local sports broadcasting, he could be heard various times doing live broadcasts of the Indianapolis 500 time trials on the radio.

Survivors include his father and step-mother, Robert Clinton and Margot Staggs of Greenwood; wife, Connie Jean Staggs of Martinsville; one son, Kip Staggs of Martinsville; three daughters, Kim Heidenreich and Kari Marie Gabehart both of Martinsville and Kelly McPike of Swayzee, IN; one brother, Wayne Staggs of Martinsville and nine grandchildren, Stephen, Adrienne and Lauren Heidenreich, Ellie Arnold, Reid, Preslie and Brody Staggs and Nicholas and Cassie McPike.

Family and friends may visit on Saturday, December 27th from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. Rev. Kevin Able will conduct a celebration of life service on Sunday, December 28th at 1:00 p.m. at Neal & Summers. He will be laid to rest in Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
