WCBS 880, the day before they were to go all-news in 1967, a plane hits its High Island tower

Just saw this. Scott Fybush told me that it was on a pier over the East River in (I think) Long Island City.

If Scott sees this, he'll tell us.

Astoria, not LIC - off the end of 30th Road where it hits the river.

From current aerial pictures, it looks like there are some warehouses where the WLIB tower platform used to be.

On the Bronx side of the Whitestone Bridge -- the downhill ramp into the Bronx -- there were four or five lit towers in a box off to the left. A USGS map had them marked as 'Radio Towers'. I doubt they were AM sticks .....

Steve, if you check Google Maps, you'll see the part of the Bronx you're describing is either Ferry Point Park or Clason Point. (So happens that was home when I was a little kid.) You'll also notice that directly across the East River is LaGuardia Airport, and in fact runway 22 lines up almost precisely with the tip of Clason Point, which I'm guessing is where those towers are. I suspect they are ILS (Instrument Landing System) towers, not broadcast.

Thanks FYBUSH . . . on WLIB site, before they moved to New Jersey, I think I found it . . . below,

I recall when they had that single tower and were just 1 KW non-DA they were not too loud in the part of New Jersey I grew up in . . . 5 miles west of Newark.

I'd listen to them back then, Eddie O'Jay was on in the morning and they played GREAT R&B music.

now the maps . . .

the area on googlemaps today . . . that little curvy/block section of the water going east is where WLIB's single tower was located before their New Jersey move. Right where the BUS STOP near water is, along Vernon, Blvd.

remember you can zoom in / out on maps . . . when you get to the site ( below link ) locate the area by putting in Astoria, Queens, New York City, move area map right to where you see the water area along Vernon Blvd. then click on AERIALS . . . then choose 1966 , you should see the area back in 1966, look for that area where the water "shoots east abit " you should see a tower with a walkway to it . . . that's the old WLIB single tower FYBUSH pointed out.

now it you check the next year up 1974. the walkway is still there, right up to about 2019.
