Hi. Do you have one from 1987? Thank's.
Edited by DiamondJoe on 06/13/05 02:39 AM.

Notice the Paul McArtney/Michael Jackson song,
Also Ashford and Simpson.
Even though its only a couple of songs, you can tell they were thinking of blending in their HitRadio format that was so popular at WCAU, WHTT, KNX FM and KHTR at the time.

I used to love the "CBS-FM yesterday (drum) 101-Today" bit. Happened every half hour and the station still sounded fresh.

One of the stipulations for 80's music after they dropped the 101-Today feature around 1993/1994 was that the song had to feature an oldies artist. "Take Me Home Tonight" by Eddie Money and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" - Pet Shop Boys got airplay because the first featured Ronnie Spector and the latter Dusty Springfield. Then there was the Rick Astley obsession, but the music fit.

Brucie used to do a Top 10 countdown on Wednesdays that would feature the Top 10 of the week with the Top 10 from a certain year. I don't remember if this ran at the same time as the two Top 20 countdowns on the weekend, or if the Top 20 countdowns came in the early 1990's after the Wed feature was dropped.

For the record, if "Solid" by Ashford & Simpson was on there, the list should actually be dated late '84 or (more likely) early '85 at the earliest.

"Solid" peaked on the R&B chart in December '84 and crossed over to the pop & AC charts in the winter of 1985.

Probably not. I was doing the logs from around 1975-1984. I am from Brooklyn, but during most of that time I was living in Philadelphia and doing an oldies show on WKDU at my college. I wanted to pattern my music after CBS-FM so I kept doing logs. Since WCBS-FM can not be received in Philadelphia I thought I was doing something novel as most people were not familiar with the format at CBS-FM. I used to receive comments about how nice it was that I played Future Gold on an oldies show.
______________

Re: WCBS-FM 1983 Music Log/And 12 hour repeats

I don't think so. Their Future Gold feature goes back to about 1973 or 1974 on CBS-FM. If anything, I think it was used to attract listeners from WABC and WXLO. WABC and WXLO played a top 40 format with much repetition of current songs. CBS-FM played the currents with very little repetition.

I think for a short time, it was one Future Gold per hour, but by around 1975, it was expanded to two.

Also, up until the nineties, CBS-FM repeated song for song, their early morning playlist twelve hours later.

I even tried freaking out unsuspecting people. I worked as an accountant in a midtown office. At 3AM, I logged a half hour and at 3PM in the office, I told people what I thought they would play while the radio was on. I was 100% right and it confirmed to them that I am weird.

I could have done better on the date. I assumed the date from the Future Gold songs played.

Hey Mike. I should know this one, shouldn't I? : )
WCBS started the yesterday/today countdown back in 1985. It was a top 15 countdown which played for example the number 15 song from this week in 1960, then the number 15 song currently. Then the number 14 song from this week in 1971, then the number 14 song currently etc, etc. I liked the concept and I was sorry to see it go. IMHO, yes some of the currents they played on that show did not belong on the station period. But if they could have played currents from a mixture of the hot a/c and a/c charts like we did at WNYG on the then & now top 10, the music would have fit better and the show might have lasted longer.

SORT OF...NOT QUITE (at least by 1990)

They sort of repeated their rotations from 11 PM-6 AM at 11 AM-6 PM. BUT it was not song for song. There were several differences an hour. Some songs that were played on overnights were not repeated during the day while some songs played during the day were not heard on overnights. The lists were about 90 % alike but not exact.

Beginning in 1992 they shifted the 11 PM-6 AM repeating. They repeated those hours starting in 1992 from 6 AM to 2 PM. The currents and some 80's songs were not repeated. Sometimes an 80's song was played during the day that was not heard on overnights. So what got repeated was not easy to predict. The repeat was about 85 % identical.

Re: WCBS-FM 1983 Music Log/And 12 hour repeats

I was watching this closely in 1984 and 1985. Max Kinkel, though he sometimes had some great monologues, probably played more songs than Bob Shannon with his newsbreaks and traffic reports and maximum spot load. That was what made the only difference back in 1984/1985.
