WCBS-FM Boosters

The FCC is in the process of granting CPs for at least six Boosters for WCBS-FM 101.1. Some were granted today, some are pending. All are directional with multi element Yagi like patterns. Does anyone know if this is about to become a common practice? Not long ago, there were only a handful of stations with multiple boosters.

Is Audacy using the “Maxxcasting” technology for all these boosters? Otherwise there will be significant signal clashes in many areas, and I’m not sure Maxxcasting actually works over flat areas. Boosters are usually employed where there is terrain blockage.

Probably not as much of an issue in the huge NYC market, but the cost of all that booster infrastructure (tower leases, maintenance) has got to be significant.
 
Certainly makes sense with WXBK, which suffers from degradation to the east and northeast due to its transmitter location (and height) in NJ. Not sure what the angle is for WCBS-FM. Perhaps Maxxcasting as you state, or trying to beef up coverage versus short spaced first adjacent WKCI?
 
Wasn't there something like "zone" commercials for on channel boosters being allowed by the FCC? I personally thought it was a "solution looking for a problem" but I have been wrong in the past.
