WCBS-FM TOP 20 COUNTDOWN-REMEMBERS 9/21/1981

This was the most awful countdown ever.

No, not because of Jeff. He is as always fantastic. (Right now I would give Jeff one of those Arsenio Hall "hoo, hoo, hoo" cheers.)

And no, I'm not saying they shouldn't do bad years. All countdowns, good and bad, should be played, IMO, so that ain't where I'm comin' from! :)

But, just for discussion sake, the music from this year.... Wow. So bad. I usually listen to these countdowns straight through, but this time I had to fast forward through some songs. So much terrible easy listening and watered-down country. And I was in junior high at the time so I remember every single one of these songs......even nostalgia wasn't enough. :D

No wonder I (and many people) were listening to AOR during this period.

PS - CBS-FM forgot to post Part 7 online. Missing the top 3....

PPS - Please, please please throw in a late 50s countdown sometime. Or a 1960-1962...

Yeah, 1958 should keep everyone riveted.....
Mexican Hat Rock by the Applejacks, Sugar Moon by Pat Boone, and Ding Dong by the McGuire Sisters
SHOULD BE A DOOZIE!!!

1981 was a slow year for pop hits. Remember 1980, 81 and some of 82 was a bit slow before the "New Wave" phenom took over and after Disco died in late 79.

"before the "New Wave" phenom took over"

That was all from MTV. The US artists were not producing videos early in the game.
So, all the songs from Europe flooded the market. (with really bad videos)

They're doing 1965 next Sunday...probably as close to the 50's as we'll get it seems.

Did you check out the British Invasion Top 101 this past weekend?

I loved the 1963 countdown!

As for choosing some bum tunes from a 50s countdown to try and suggest it's a dumb idea.....well, it's easy to be selective. I could just as easily choose a countdown with Elvis, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino. Sorry, but that was a lame argument.

No, Oldies76, I didn't hear the British Top 101. Too busy watching the Dodgers. Was it any good?

Go Blue!! The British Top 101 is the one featured on the WCBS homepage, far left column. Great songs!
