WCBS-FM Top 500 List - Memorial Day Weekend 2013

There'll be just one run through the entire list which just concluded shortly after 8pm ET on Sunday evening 5/26/13.

There will be a run-through of the Top 200 from the list on Monday 5/27/13 from 6am-10pm.

How the list was formulated* with the Top 10 vote-getting songs by decade (most of which placed within the Top 30 of the overall list):

The standard disclaimer from the website: "*Songs are selected based on original chart history and popularity with CBS-FM listeners."

I can't take these Top Several-Hundred shows seriously. Is a station really going to spend several hours playing listeners' least-favorite songs out of 500? I presume they play around with the rankings to make sure they get a good mix of music in every hour. But then what's the attraction for listeners when they tune in and hear "Now here's #487!" It suggests they won't hear any really GOOD songs for many hours yet. And by the way - Did actual people actually vote for Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Suede as one of their favorite songs? It was played somewhere in the 400s on WCBS on Friday.

I think it was one of the incarnations of WRXP that did a top 102 or some such thing, and they really did have people fill out ballots online, so it may or may not have reflected actual voting. But they played it in a sensible way: They spread it over a 3-day weekend and the survey songs were played a few times an hour, interspersed through the regular mix. Made sense to me.

I tend to agree with this too.

Looked at the list. Actually it is very good, and probably reflects the taste of the CBS listener.

The Top 500 list on WCBS-FM Pre-Jack was a true listener voted countdown. There are literally thousands of hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s that charted and are still popular with listeners. If I enjoy a record, I don't care what number it is.

I understand the demographics issue, but I wish there were a "heart of rock n roll" specialty show to hear the early hits.

Some stats on the Top 500 that may interest some of you...

- The midpoint ended up at May 15th, 1975.
- Represented years: 1961-1990 (they both had 1 song each) except none from 1963.
- Most songs represented by a year 1978 (36 songs)

I didn't like the new Top 500 survey, but I prefer the original Top 500 over the new one, but I guess there was only one that I do remember was "In the Still of the Nite" by the Five Satins which is still became a staple as the quenticential New York song. I heard this song on WGNY-FM's "Fox Oldies" in the Hudson Valley area at 8:39 AM in the morning when "Fox Oldies" played this song that WCBS-FM used to play the #1 oldie of all time in the New York Top 500. I hope they should bring it back and play some pre-1964 music that WGNY-FM "Fox Oldies" is playing now.
