WCCC Takes A Big Hit

WCCC down almost 23% from the summer book. They go from #6 to #9. This is also their lowest showing since losing Stern last year.

Damn! The ratings only tumbled now?

I don't understand the point of your reply. Is it supposed to be funny? If so, I don't get it...could you explain?

No I wasn't trying to be funny. I thought their ratings would slide sooner than that once Stern left.

Has anything at WCCC changed in the last 5-10 years? Apart from Stern leaving, of course. The playlist was pretty awful last time I heard it. Just one 80's hair band per hour, please :)
Rock can be so much more.

With these lower numbers, there may be some budget cutbacks. If there is, who do you think will take the first hit? Picozzi or Sebastian? ? ? ?

being a very longtime ccc listener,
1. way too many adds!
2. shup up picozzi and play music..
3. concert/what the hell should be done quicker ie do what only going on that night...
4. do what WTOS does :commercial free overnights. (CCC used too didn't they?)
5. bring back old specials that slater did... 106 min commercial free rock, madlibs, stupid state laws, and the nightime lounge that used to take place in the 11pm hour...
with these changes they might get more listners

other suggestions include: all hair weekend... (never seen it done)
another metallica A-Z weekend ( its been awhile), Iron Maiden A-Z (never gonna happen...)
a WCCC A-Z week.. (always wanted to see it done)

If all you want to hear is music, listen to your CDs and Ipod, get Satellite, or listen to Jack.

Or, you can do what i did, and start listening to WBRU. Thier playlist has been getting more 'active rock' in it latley, and with fewer commercials. They come in almost all the way in to Hartford.

Point is, CCC is losing listeners to other stations.

Actually WCCC is doing very well with the demo their advertisers care most about, Men 24-50.

How would you know that? Are you an "insider?" If you know the numbers, where do they stand in that demo.....#1, #2.....??????? My experience shows that if the 12+ numbers deteriorate then most of the deterioration comes from the target demo.

Some of the other stations in the market took at hit too. The country station for instance. Most of the programming pros I talk to attribute this to the large number of listeners who flocked to the Lite 100.5 becase they playing Xmas music for close to 6 weeks straight. We'll have to wait for the next book to see how things play out.

Skip the Christmas music! I avoid that crap like the plague! As for WCCC-FM, I usually have then on the Walkman if I'm out and about the area, yet rarely have them on, if ever, at home. :O

Do you seriously believe that the WCCC crowd, with their musical tastes, was flocking to WRCH for Christmas music?

I doubt it. More likely Sebastion is starting to wear on the listeners. AM drive is the audience engine for any radio station and his act just ain't cuttin' it.

It doesn't matter whether or not we think Cristmas music is "crap." It's about what works, and these major ACs would not have devoted this amount of time to it if it cost them listeners and revenue. I think the point was more about Christmas music's effect on a more directly competitive format like country than something like active rock.

I'm always skeptical when we radio folks and posters think something or someone is "wearing out" on listeners after a matter of mere weeks or months. It's really like starting from scratch. Stern was a tough act to follow. Now there's an understatement. WCCC must be in it for a longer haul, since Sebastian has been all over TV lately flashing cash in our faces. He's no stranger to local radio, but Stern certainly made that slot his own in recent years.

Glenn... I agree with you. Maybe "wearing out" was the wrong choice of words. But I think that Sebastian has lost the "edge" that he had a few years ago.

If you listen to Stern or Imus, two guys who have definitely defined the art of morning talk radio, you find that they don't dominate the mic time on their shows. They have enough savvy to let some talented cohorts contribute to the entertainment. Sebastian doesn't do that. I think he has about three people in the studio with him and they rarely say a word. They don't contribute.

Imus and Stern always have interesting guests on their shows. Does Sebastian? I think that's what I mean by "wearing out" the listener. Sebastian could probably be a lot better if he would play off his assistants and guests rather than dominating the microphone.

One other thing... It's not "mere weeks or months" that Sebastian's been back. It's over a year now. If he was going to have any impact I think we'd be seeing it by now.

I think "wearing out" was the right choice of words. I can't listen anymore.

Are you saying that WCCC listeners don't like Xmas music? The listeners that caused Lite 100.5's late November and December ratings to increase by 2 - 3 times in some demos had to come from somewhere! And remember, radio listening isn't done in a vacuum . . . some in the business attribute peaks in listening such as this to the "girlfriend factor". In this case, I bet there were a number of guys who listened to WRCH instead of say WWYZ or WCCC because that's what their significant other wanted to hear. I know it's all my wife wanted to listen to before the holidays.

GlennO's point is well taken . . . and keep in mind I'm no Sebastian fan . . . one down book (12+ mind you) doesn't mean that Sebastian is "wearing out", only time will tell how this plays out. From all of the TV spots for WCCC that I am seeing it is clear that 106.9 is staying the course.
