WCCD off it again

This is an occasional issue. AM1000 is, and has been for the past few days, both on and off in the following way ... The transmitter appears to be on, but the programming sound is off. Although there is some noise, when I press "scan/search" on my car radio, it does stop at 1000AM while driving around Greater Cleveland.

Do they use an STL to send sound to the transmitter which is in Parma?

Yes. However, in the late afternoon on Friday I switched to it and way-way-way underneath a bit of noise, I could, just barely, hear some talking, but not good, or loud, enough to make out what was being said. The only reason I surmised that the carrier was on was because the scan on my car radio stopped at 1000AM. This morning, Saturday 3/5, in my house, it sounds like that the transmitter is off.

I wonder if they run their programming on an internet site as well as over-the-air, so people can listen there, and the buyers of the "air" time would be satisfied with an on-line presence?

If there was still daylight out when you tuned in late afternoon, could it have been another station you were hearing under their carrier? If so, the most logical candidate would be WMVP out of Chicago that you could have been hearing.
 
That was my first thought as well. It's not uncommon for WMVP to make it into central Ohio as early as 4 or 4:30 in February, and 3 or so in December. Whatever time of year, it's one of the first Chicago 50Ks to make it out here thanks to a directional pattern that sends most of its nighttime signal at both Columbus and Cleveland.
 
Someone could visit fcc.gov and probably find out and report it here. I'd like to know, but I don't have enough interest to do it myself.

So I take it that this would work by using the three nighttime towers of WHK during the day for WCCD, while the fourth will be in use for WHK's non-directional daytime broadcast?
 
As per their silent STA:

"WCCD has been silent since August 11, 2022 and an associated request for authority for WCCD to remain silent until suitable new transmission facilities can be constructed. WCCD is presently licensed to operate directionally on 1000 kHz at a power level of 500 watts only during daytime hours using a four tower directional antenna system and has a pending application for a construction permit to operate daytime only at a power level of 200 watts directional using the three towers which comprise the nighttime directional antenna system of WHK(AM) - Cleveland, Ohio.

The land on which the licensed WCCD directional antenna system was located, as well as all four towers, were owned by a different entity, which sold the land for development. As a result, all four of the former WCCD towers, including the one it had been using for nondirectional operation pursuant to special temporary authority were demolished on August 11, 2022, forcing the station off the air. WCCD is presently evaluating the options to seek special temporary authority for nondirectional operation from the WHK site until the directional facilities proposed in the pending application (BP20220622AAB) can be implemented."
 
WCCD has been off and on since at least March 4, 2022 as the very first post, listed here at the top, indicates. They should post up-to-date notifications about where they are in getting back on the air as the major focus of their website.

That would require rebuilding the towers and the array if they intend to stay on AM 1000, which is not worth the effort or money. On top of that, AM 1540 was a daytime only station, and so is WCCD. The FCC no longer issues new licenses to daytime only stations.

I meant use the existing 1540 facilities and broadcast on 1540 or has that ship sailed.

If Good Karma hasn't already filed an extension before the deadline to hold onto the 1540 license, then the station is history. They may get around this by filing for a new license with a very under powered nighttime broadcast, we're talking a couple hundred watts to avoid interfering with other 1540's, but I don't know if that's possible
