WCDL returned to the air this past year with a format of classic country. After a couple weeks of Christmas music, WCDL has reverted to what it once was: a standards station, very very similar to WNAK (before the FM took over it's programming).>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>When Rt. 81 bought WCDL and announced it's plans to fix it, I did think that the format would return to it's original....the format fits Carbondale to a T...and the businesses that have been in town for a decade or more remember WCDL exactly as it is playing now. The opportunity to retake those advertisers is better now than in it's former format, in my opinion......I'm curious as to what made Ed change his mind on the format...and if potential advertisers asked for the format to return to WCDL.......>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Overall it is this posters opinion that the change was the correct one, and should be easier for Carbondale to adopt to (and embrace) at this point in time.
______________

Classic country is very good music, but very limited in
scope. The artists like Eddy Arnold, Buck Owens, Statler
Brothers aren't even touring anymore. Other artists
haven't had a hit in years. These people are memories to
a very rapidly aging population that is diminishing. A WNAK
type format would seem to have a broader appeal even though
the demo is roughly the same.

WHYL here in Carlisle has returned to Standards, and so far the response has been overwhelming. Shows you what can happen when someone who knows that the business needs to DO business can get back to basics to get it done, and make it work. I look for a strong year for WCDL, WNAK, and WHYL

Gee...How long ago was it that this board was lit up with rave revues of WNAK FM
and WCDL on how this was going to be the next big thing in radio. Some people just dont get it! There is nothing wrong with these formats, personally I feel there is a lot of great music within them. But the bottom line is the BOTTOM LINE....this is a business folks , plain and simple, money talks. You can have a zillion 70 year old people listening but if the businesses decide their dollars are going to be spent getting 40 year old customers you better react to it or else.
I'm a child of the 60's and 70's, even formats featuring music from this era
are already being abandoned.Hey I can deal with that.Every thing has its' time and all things must pass and move on, doesn't mean what was succesful before sucks, it just isn't no longer working. As far as WCDL, its never gonna be a major player or a factor in NEPA radio.Let it serve its' local area with information and news...cheap spots
and it could make a few bucks and be solvent. It's format is dead as the Yonkster has stated...Happy New Year... BROTHER!

WAZL as well has changed format......

I look for a strong year for WCDL, WNAK, and WHYL> HOWEVER, I don't know what the format is....the last time I was in Hazelton, (August) I tuned in the station......as a radio guy I was amazed at how much advertising WAZL had...it seemed like wall-to-wall commercials, and in the morning it seemed like it was all talk programming....compared to the NEPA Rt 81 stations, WAZL seemed to be making some real decent money....If WHYL has taken on a standards format, Rt. 81 is really beginning (and they have really only been around about a year) to serve the markets they are in, by carefully looking at what is needed on the air.......this is really good news because I thought that Rt.81's business plan was an excellent idea from the getgo...it is finally taking on a more interesting turn right now............there is always a lot of talk about catering to retirees....but the fact is that retirees will sit down and actually listen to the radio...and will potentially shop the advertisers mentioned along with their favorite music....these listeners are not all dead and gone yet!!....Anymore, it is most important for a local AM to serve it's potential listeners with a format they can't hear elsewhere. A lot of talk has been generated over the last decade concerning the death of AM radio, and music on AM radio....check out your dial, and see if there is not more music on AM now than there was just 10 years ago....there is a real reason for that: AM is again beginning to realize that they don't have to be all talk....why would a 1,000 watt local AM clear talk programming that can also be picked up locally from a 50,000 watter from NYC?....why pay the fees?...Local radio is at it's best when it serves it's community, and Rt 81 is on the right track to do exactly that........Carl
______________

Does that mean that Jim Brando, or even Paul Oles, will be back with the daily polka show?

Paul is working at a supermarket. He looks and sounds great. I bet he'd jump at the opportunity to do a few hours a week.
